It wasn't so much the method as the execution. If someone used one of my good (read $40-$90) files in such a ham-handed manner my temper would expire instantly. Files only cut one direction and dragging them backwards ruins them fast. Every competent craftsman who files metal precisely knows this...when you're learning it's one of the first things the crusty old guy yells at you for.

Here's the thing, regardless...... If you had him do a fret level, without seeing this video and you got it back, and the playability was flawless, the frets were level and clean, does it matter his technique?

I say no.


After saying this, there are probably folks that would not agree with the way I do it...... Radius block (to the proper radii) lightly with 80 grit, then 220 (mark all the fret tops), recrown and polish, but everyone has their way of doing it.....

jeff, if the file only cuts one way, and it doesn't belong to you, does it matter which direction he goes in? ;)

believe me, i'm not calling that a flawless example of how to level frets...i'm just saying i've seen similar actions by a number of luthiers.

Hey, if that's how he wants to do it in his shop I could give a flying fark. When he steps up onto the soapbox and publicly sez, "Hey, kids this is you ya do it"....well, that's a whole nuther thing....see the difference?

As a master of my trade I care about more than simply the end results. A master handles tools with care bordering on reverence and instills that in his students.

Grain of salt my man. Anyone that claims to be a "master" at anything, may have some issues though.

Grain of salt is good.
And I said "master" not "expert". I have the "beginner's mind" attitude I've maintained through apprentice and journeymanship and if you got something to teach me about my craft I'm all ears....learning never stops ESPECIALLY for a master. Actually if you have stopped learning I'd argue there's no way you are a master.

The bottom line here is this village "expert" was using a file in a manner than an apprentice would get scolded for. That was my point and really my only point. If you disagree then you do in fact have something to learn about using a file.

well sure. a lot of people have no business making how-to videos. but they do it. nothing you can do about it except use forums like this to voice a second opinion.

btw, i have seen jason rickett's work, and it really is nice ;)

Do I have shortcomings? Of course I do.... Do I continue to learn? Don't be absurd, I certainly learn daily.. However, I could see somone considering themselves an expert, but a master? Typically when someone is considered a master, it's usually by others and not self proclaimed.

Did I say I have something to teach you? I do not consider myself a teacher.

I believe this is just spinning our wheels here........

So again I state:

If the final product is on par with any very decent fret level (regardless of the method), then would you agree, that any other fact at this point is moot? Or do were just agree to disagree?

Jeez that looked rough! I like the "slight diagonal" filing - nothing like trying to polish out cross hatching later. If I saw my 17 year old son doing that, or crowning frets without removing the strings, he'd soon know he'd done something wrong!
