check this one out from last week.
really fun and excellent sax work. You don't have to like it, but the spot- on intonation, full tone and flowing technical performance is undeniable.
For those that don't know, the live experience is always that spontaneous! And there was a lot of funk to be had as well. Stevie is amazing!

Actually it is interesting that this phenomenon has passed us by completely in the UK.
So if I take the example of Pat Metheny :
I see great reviews for his albums in magazines like JazzWise and imported US Jazz magazines.
His albums are mentioned in reference works like Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD.
If I go to specialist Jazz shops in London - I see promotions/features on Pat Metheny.
If I go to sheet music shops - I see the Pat Metheny Song book and other books
When I go to Jazz workshops/classes, the tutors mention Pat Metheny as a big influence. They discuss his compositions.
When I go to Jazz jams people have suggested we play Pat Metheny tunes and produce lead sheets.
I have played Pat Metheny tunes in groups.
If I listen to radio shows like Jazz on 3 or Jazz requests on the BBC - I have heard Pat Metheny mentioned and his albums with Brad Meldhau etc.
But for Kenny G - nothing - none of the above...

Wel I am very flattered that you have chosen to address me personally- I am a nobody after all, have never played with anybody like Stevie Wonder and all I have said is that you can't force me to like it...and that in the UK it has never been an issue?
But rather than talking to me, why aren't you addressing people who have made comments like this :

because Kenny's a pop artist!; why WOULD he be mentioned in a jazz seminar? That point seems to escape so many people, it's really baffling. At our biggest time in the early 90's, we were battling Whitney Houston for the #1 pop album in the land. We were #2 for weeks; that's not the jazz chart, that's Billboard pop chart!
I'll say it again; KENNY G IS A POP ARTIST, NOT JAZZ. Sorry for the caps but I think it needed to be done
More specifically, Kenny categorizes his music as "R&B instrumental". We have a huge African American following here in the states; they understand the difference between jazz and pop music. They love Kenny G for what he is, great R&B instrumental music with lots of slow groove, romantic tunes that are great for setting a 'mood'. I can't tell you how many times guys have come up after the show, with their woman looking a bit sheepish, and said how they love the music for that very reason. Now that's a helpful service, in anyone's estimation!!!! \As for passing the UK by, that's far from true,we just passed YOU by.
We played Wembley arena for 6 straight sold out concerts in the 90's, played Royal Albert Hall, etc. etc. Sorry you couldn't make it but we were there nonetheless.
We played 'Top of the Pops' and several other TV shows, too. Didn't see Metheny on any of them!!!
So enough of comparing Kenny G to jazz players, it's ridiculous.

Glad you brought up that point about Kenny G being "mood" music, a lot of men and women I know feel the same way. I went to a Kenny G concert at Jones Beach a few years back and the crowd was just loving him he knows how to entertain and engage the audience which is why people go to see him in large numbers.
IMO, a Jazz artist would want to be on the same card as Kenny G at a festival because it will ensure a much wider audience for their own music to be heard.

Sorry - that's not how I listen to music - I give it my full attention as a work of art in its own right - I don't see at as background or aural wallper!
If it's not worth my full attention then I just don't listen - my girlfriend is into guitar-based rock and would love Stevie Ray Vaughan but hates Pat Metheny ...oh and of course has never heard of KennyG!
She does like KoB and Horace Silver though..
Wow.. I'm not sure what part of GB you live in, but when I lived there (for about 6.5 years) Lot's of people knew about and loved Kenny G's music. That whole pop jazz thing did not pass by the British Isles. If the people you ran with were not into that type of music that would be one thing. But to say nobody over there ever heard of Kenny is just silly. And shows your bias. It's almost like you are saying "I dont like them so they dont exist"

I had a 10 year period where I didn't play my bass at all! I was still listening to music, discovering music & loving music the entire time! I also had a period where I became a jazz snob until I heard The Rippingtons! Brought me back to reality! Which is.........a good song is a good song no matter what the genre! Not only that, when I did return to music, I found I had to learn and play music of all types (including Kenny G tunes) whether I liked them or not. Once I heard the melody, the songs weren't that bad and I learned to actually like the songs. The moral of the story.......having an open mind is not so bad! Try it sometime!

Seriously, Metheny has his share of Jazz-lite/Pop, too (the Brasilian-based material?).
It's not all Song X for him.
