Who's Overrated? Who's Underrated?

The music mags are much to blame.

I remember years ago that Guitar Player magazine would do things like praise BB King all year for example as a blues player (sure he's great, but he'd not the only one) and Lee Ritenour (as an example) as a studio guitarist and Stanley Clark as a jazz bassist, so on in various genres.

Then they'd have a write in poll on who was the best in each genre and guess what? The players featured the most in the previous 12 months won.

Imho, we're all best off if we listen to the players who inspire us.

If we just pursue our own inspiration, and learn from our own favourite players, it won't matter much who anybody else idolizes, or who gets more press!

Wow! Here we go again. Guys like Marcus Jaco and Victor are really really overrated. Theyre not that good at all. People have not been trying to emulate them for years or anything. Sometimes I wonder if this is Talkbass or TalkComedy because some of you guys are really funny. Can anyone explain what exactly makes someone overrated? Quit hatin on people and spend more time practicing.

I'll give you an explanation why I find them overrated

-No tolerance of their music genres (using to be into jazz when I was going through a musical elitist faze as a teenager)
- I do not find the playing interesting
- They are good, but the songs they have recorded or perform live do not do anything for my brain
- It's an opinion, deal with it.

No one is questioning technical prowess or virtuosity. It's about the music, and the way it makes you FEEL. A few minutes of Jaco and I am bored. He does not move in me what he clearly does for many others. I, therefore, think he is overrated. Doesn't make anyone right or wrong...it's just an opinion. People feel the same way about Les, whereas I think he is a genius of monster proportions.

On the other hand, I don't think players like Ron Royce or Dick Lovgren get the recognition they deserve because I wonder why people don't hear what I hear. Again, doesn't make anyone right or wrong...it's just an opinion based on how certain sounds stimulate ones INDIVIDUAL senses. We are all wired with very subtle differences, which is why our opinions differ.

how can u say lemmys over rated?....if it wernt for motorhead there would be no metal!....ok after overkill his bassing became quite lazy or perhaps stylised,but his days in hawkwind were blinding,he and the drummer of the time simon king were a real powerfull rhythm section and his jamming was great,listen to space ritual...dont for get he was buzzing his nuts off on amphetamines......another under rated,ill probly get flamed!! is cronos of venom,i think with john entwhistle it wasnt what the left hand was doing but the right!!.....i totaly dont get that bloke from quorn....or the young girl......and i cant stand macca!!.....oh yea ronnie lane of the small faces was pretty good too!!....oh yea i like demis rousoss too......Link Removed

I think I came off a bit harsh. Sorry bout that. I guess when you say the PLAYER is overrated I get a liitle POed. I take it a bit personal because I like them so much. I can understand not liking the music or genre but as far as skills go those guys got em and thought that was what was being discussed. Anyway I think I'll take a pill and chill. No offense to anyone!

Overrated, (and this will get some people upset), but Chris Squire from Yes. He is sloppy, his tone gets old really quick, (I think he wanted that tone so his ear ache inducing licks would stand out). Thank God by the time Trevor Rabin came along, that midrangy, distorted, grungy tinny tone was replaced by something closer to a bass.

But it never fails. If I play Roundabout in front of anybody, they think it is some great feat. I show them how easy it is and that he is just doing pull offs, and then they understand.

Geddy Lee is never overrated because he simgs lead, play Taurus pedals, and keyboards.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. This is not a particular player, but.....

ANY JAM BANDS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe it because I gave up weed years ago, have a job, and I actually like songs, but after 5 minutes of Phish, Widespread Panic, etc, I want to hang myself by my E string. There is nothing more irritating than a band that plays the same song for 25 minutes and everyone solos.

I am not taking away from their musical abilities, they are some of the finist players. But if you are playing to show off your skill, become a solo artist or a jazz fusion band that plays in the clubs once or twice a week. If it wasn't for spoiled trust fund fund babies and wake-n-bake stoners, The Grateful Dead would not even have a fan base.

If Ray Schulman (Gentle Giant) wasn't mentioned here, that's a tragedy, in my opinion.
One of the most amazing players. Look him up, then try and learn some of his bass parts.
I say bass because he's also an amazing violinist, guitarist, drummer, recorder player, and vocalist as well.
