I don't think age has much to do with i. If that were the case, all older bass players would be better than all younger ones and that's just not the case. I've know dozens of people who start young, show tremendous promise and wind up quite ordinary.
Tai -- I think she's actually a little overrated. She's so cute you can't help but not like her. But if she were a 40 year old fat guy with a fuzzy beard she'd just be considered "pretty good."

I'm unaware that there is any kind of rating system for bassists.
Just sharing thoughts and opinions bro. If you're not interested there are plenty of other things to do.
I don't think anyone over the age of eleven actually thinks Simmons is a great player.
Supposedly, Vicious never even played on any recordings. He was so inept that the guitarist recorded the bass parts.
I like Patitucci a lot so I'll leave these here and hope that they help him out a bit

To say Patitucci plays with no heart just boggles the mind. I have seen him live as well, his playing is very moving...he has incredible time and groove as well.

perhaps you're talking about Monk Montgomery, Wes's brother, playing electric bass?
+1 Patitucci plays with heart, soul and, as you say, incredible time and groove, too, on everything from his work with Chick Corea to his work with Wayne Shorter's quartet (astonishing, IMO) to his solo projects. He's not just a chops monster, although he IS that, and his technical facility on upright AND six-string electric is phenomenal.
Some of these "overrated" lists suggest that the people writing the lists don't have a lot of listening experience ...
Or maybe we just, y'know, have different tastes? Guys like him and Miller and Wooten can do anything on a bass, except write a song that I want to listen to more than once. Conversely, I have to listen to James Brown every night before I go to bed.
For my money, I'll take Bootsy.
EDIT: Holy god....
I just watched a couple of those Fieldy videos and had to choke back some vomit. I can't believe he actually earns cash money to play the bass.

Victor Wooten-i enjoy some of his stuff, and the stuff he does with his band is awesome, but i can't stand his soloes

To be fair, are you talking about bassists or composers? The OP said nothing about a given bassist's ability as a composer, so that aspect of things would seem irrelevant to the discussion at hand.
I'd +1 Mike Mills, and I don't even particularly like REM. Just think his sense of melody is fantastic.

It seems as if a lot of people here are evaluating certain players on the basis of their being solo artists only. If you grew up in the 80s, you no doubt unknowingly heard Marcus as a session player on so many records that it would make your head spin. Part of the reason MM gets so much respect in the industry is that he has made an incredible contribution as a studio musician and a sideman. His solo work is really only a small fraction of what he has accomplished as a bassist, composer and producer.
