Agreed. Even if you don't like him, it must be recognized that Mac's genius isn't so much in his facility but in the fact that he's a brilliant composer and he transfers that compositional skill to the bass. The first guy to play bass counterpoint in rock.
Without Paul, NONE of us would play the way we do because virtually everyone who influenced us was influenced by Paul.
And not only that... he also has phenomenal time, a great feel (especially knowing when to play short notes vs. long notes), and always a wonderful sound. A great PLAYER, period, as well as great bassplaying composer.
