Who's This Bassist Playing with Chaka?

This song is one of the reasons I first picked up a bass.

I've listened to countless versions of this song, but there's something about this bassist's groove that puts it at the top for me.

You can see him best at ~4:45. He looks like my ninth grade science teacher, but he definitely isn't.

And he's a lefty. Hopefully that helps.

Love that tune. I filled in for a bass player in a band playing R&B and top 40 stuff, and they covered this tune. I learned it on bass first, then tried it out on my Moog Sub Phatty. Learning it on synth was waaaaay fun.

I was confused for a minute because you can see during the slap/pop sections that Jimmy doesn't have his hand in "slap" position. Then I remembered that he plays with his bass upside down. Sure enough, he's popping with his thumb.

Another current bassist that plays like this is Stan Sargent who I saw with KebMo 3 or 4 years ago. Interesting because the slap is the tips of index and middle fingers hitting down hard on the lower strings and the thumb popping. Hard to follow.
