I loved his playing with the Yellowjackets. I saw him with Al Jareau in the early eighties, great player. Andrew Gouche played with Chaka for years too.

Did I see that right? He's got the strings in right-handed orientation, but has the bass itself playing lefty? Lights on top and heavies on bottom?

IIRC, the story is that his dad agreed to buy him a bass. He's left handed. They went to the local music store which only had righty basses. Undeterred, he got one of those and learned to play it his way. And quite well indeed.

He's still very busy, though not with the Yellowjackets anymore. Any bass player who has a chance to see him live, I recommend it. The way the strings are oriented versus his body and fingers create some interesting sounds that we aren't quite accustomed to. Plus, he's just a badass overall. And by the way, usually very down for a picture after his set.

Cool, I didn't realize Lee was playing a reverse-strung bass!

When I was in high school one of my bandmates was a lefty who had learned to play guitar and bass by borrowing right-handed players' instruments, so it was really easy for us to swap instruments back & forth. Our one super-cool party trick was during the brief time when I owned a double-neck guitar: I would hold the instrument up so the necks were vertical and play on the top neck, and then my left-handed bandmate would come around from the opposite side and play on the lower neck simultaneously!
Much hilarity ensued.
