Why all the Duff bashing?

Actually, Steve Bailey played the bass parts on AFD. I was at a clinic where he told a story about being called into a studio to redo all the bass parts because the band's bass player wasn't cutting it. He was under contract not to mention the band's name, but he said something about "firearms and flowers"...:eyebrow::)

Not intending to dispute your information whatsoever, but I know a few people who were around for those sessions and they maintain that the 5 members of GNR were the ones who recorded that album... :hiding:

Also, just to sling more snot at the guy (troll) that accused him of being stupid, Duff has his degree in accounting. :)

Very well educated guy... In fact, here's his weekly blog in Seattle... ;) [This invalid link has been removed]

I like his playing with GnR and dig his tone. It's hard to imagine those albums without him.

Exactly.

I love ELP, Crimson, Floyd, Zeppelin, and some newer experimental stuff(such as Mars Volta's first two albums), but I also love Duff's basslines because they are catchy and groove well.

Duff had a near-perfect Fender tone for rock.

It sounded thick and woody, and yet it cut through the mix like a knife(partially due to the use of a pick and a crunchy GK800RB).

+100

I love the bass/drums groove at the beginning of that song...

One of my favorite things to do is listen to music with noise cancelling headphones on and really concentrate on the bass tone... AFD and UYI make it on that list more often than not...

Great bassist, probably one of my biggest inspirations. He plays bass well and it sounds good thats all that needs to be said MONSTER tone too. I never understood why things have to be technical to be good, ive gone past taht point now its all about tastefulness.

Oh and hes friends with Sheehan eh.

Good for Duff.
Seattle U is a hard school!

It wouldn't surprise me if Bailey had to redo DM's parts. He wasn't the healthiest at that point in his life.
It's not an uncommon occurrence with major labels, esp with David Geffen.

Don't get me wrong, I like Duff. His playing has definitely gotten more solid. He does what the song requires. That's good enough for me to say he's ok.

I don't question your having heard this first-hand but this is one of those rumors I've heard before but always ignored due to the fact that Axl's step-father was also named Steve Bailey (I think Axl changed his real name to William Bailey at some point as well).

No worries at all, my friend, but consider this...if there was another "ringer" brought in, they'd prolly do it when they knew nobody else would be around! You can't bring in a sub when the guy he's subbing for is hanging around...;)

I'm kinda envious of any bassist who gets to do what he/she loves to do in front of lots of people and gets paid lots of cash for doing it. The dirty dogs...... whether flashy or not and whether it's a style of music I like.

What a great thing to be extremely well-paid for doing something must people love to do simply as a hobby or working-hobby.

I reiterate: The dirty dogs!!!!! :)

Wow, a lot of you guys must be the greats with aliases.
For all you others, I say Duff is a very good player you can learn from. He constructs great, melodic lines that enhance (and sometime make) the song. He also has a great feel and tone, which is not a given.
I'm not a G&R fan but when I hear their songs I'm always drawn to the bass line and tone. Duff is about the only reason I'll listen to a G&R song.
So JP Jones, Jack Bruce, Sir Paul, Flea, Geddy, Justin Chancellor ... I won't argue with you guys, but the rest of you - get real.

Seriously, I see so much bad stuff on here about him, I just wanted to know why so many of you have something against the man?

you guys have convinced me that i need to give him another listen. i've checked out a few of the clips here and there that people have posted about him and i'm still not seeing it. but if i can dig up a copy of AFD i'll give it a listen. i think i need to find my old box of tapes... and find a tape player. it might take a while.

Duff was a drummer originally and was so for years before GNR, he locks in with the drums and THAT is why he is great. forget the melodies, as good as they are from him because he was also a guitarist before he was a bassist, he was a solid pocket player and instinctively knew where to take bass lines.

as far as Duff not recording on ATF i think thats complete crap. watch the early videos of those guys, he plays the bass lines to a T just like the were on the record. you can go back to videos from 86 and 87 and see for yourself. according to Slash in his auto Duff, Izzy and Steven all played live together and it shows with how dynamic the music is.

I think this is bs , if the bass player was not good enough to the extent that the whole albums bass parts had to be redone then surely the band would have parted ways with him , especially seeing as axl is not the type to mess around when it comes to firing his band members.
I hear these kind of rumours all the time about various bands band members not having played on their albums.
