Why AMPEG?... Are they that Good?

I talked briefly with Marcus Miller after an insane performance here in LA. He's so good it's painful, and he's really a nice guy.
When we discussed gear (I told him I like his sound, etc) he smiled, said "Ah, Man, it doesn't matter, I like to try different rigs sometimes, but I'm at the point where it's not even important anymore- My foundation is what I go for, and I can get that with any amp/speaker."
Marcus is a pretty smart dude.

Don't get me wrong, I love gear, but that is cool....

As for Ampeg i've yet to try one that really did it for me, but i'm sure it just might happen someday.

Marcus speaks the truth, though...the gear really shouldn't matter. He can get a great sound out of anything...but notice he's not playing budget gear like Behringer.

IMO, Ampeg has been known for years as THE bass amp to have, kinda' like Fender for electric guitars and Martin for acoustic guitars. Sure there are higher end amps, just like higher end guitar brands, but aspiring musicians see brands like Fender and Ampeg...and they probably feel safe about buying their products.

This thread may sound silly but just wanted to ask for your opinions on Ampeg amplification.
We all know that Ampeg amps are a Classic because of their welknown tone, and they've got such a good reputation but nowadays, there are a lot of competence in the high end market: SWR, EBS, AGUILAR, SADOWSKY, EDEN, ASHDOWN, GK, GENZ BENZ...
So here is where my question comes:

Why most of the bass players in known bands are using Ampeg?
Is it truly about their quality and tone or...Is there any other reason behind, such Ampeg endorsing them as a marketing campaign?

I think the reception the VT pedal has gotten recently proves the viability of and the desire for the 'Ampeg' sound (IMO really the B-15 and SVT) in today's world, if not the reality of what Ampeg itself means in today's market.
