Why are Bass amps more expensive?

The '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue is an all tube amp. Give me that in a bass amp and cab for $850.
I can't argue that on the new amp market. If tubes are what you're looking for in a bass amp you're going to have to shell out the big bucks just for an amp. I was just pointing out that many bass players are getting the tone they want in that price range...there's certainly those that aren't.

Hey you don't have to convince me. I'm getting my "current" ideal sound from a couple of 15" combo amps working together for less than $300. But my setup is probably not going to do it for too many people. lol You can get good sounding SS guitar amps for much less. My point being that many guitar players would consider an all tube Deluxe Reverb the only amp they would ever need. It is, after all, the most recorded amp in music history. The number of bass players out there salivating for an all tube Ampeg, or the likes, will never come close to that type of entry point.

IMO, it's not... Are you comparing the right lines with each other? Cause I have a friend who just bought a $2300 Marshall head. I think they're the same - it's just hard to really compare because the models/specs are different. Depending on the brands too on what is considered high end for guitar amps and which bass amp brand do we compare them too if a certain company doesn't make both.

Say Fender for example, they're guitar amps are highly regarded but I don't think bass players think of them as highly as guitarists do (though I could be wrong).

My 2 cents anyway....

Agree on Fender bass amps generally not being so highly regarded but I gotta throw this in- the Fender Bassman 300 Pro is the sickest bass head I have ever used. Yes, its technically a Sunn design but its says "Fender" on it!

Regarding the amp cost discussion here- for heads I think its about the same. Cabinets, on the other hand (or at least good cabinets), us bass players spend double (roughly).

Dude, that is hilarious.

It's all true except for the FX part.

Guitar is cheaper in the low end spectrum. The guitarist in my old band had my used Crate GFX1200H ($99) and a new B52 LS-412 ($199 before they upped the price). It may not be the most beautiful sounding rig, but at $300, he could drown out the rest of the 4 piece band. There's nothing in a modular bass setup that competes volume wise at the price point. But as you go up in quality, they even out.

And I still want my Crate amp back.

Boutique guitar amps are WAY expensive. Brands like Matchless, Divided By 13, Suhr, etc, all cost big dollars. You can spend 3K for a guitar amp real easy.

that's a big +1.
my guitar players both bought used marshall heads cheap, which sound incredible to me, but they're both looking to upgrade, one to a framus (+/- $3000) and the other to a freakin' diezel($4000). granted, those are high end boutique amps, but i don't know of many bass amps that break that price point. i think it kind of makes up for what we have in the boutique bass market, where the standards aren't near as set as they are in guitars. i.e. fender and gibson. granted, i don't look at guitar gear often at all, but i rarely see guitar players with some crazy burled top hunk of wood bearing a name that just commands a $3-4000 price tag. then again, they're still paying $2000+ for production les pauls...:hiding:

If in fact this is true? I'd apply my "String Theory" Whichs propounds that bass players are not buying strings at the rate that guitar players are, therefore, a good set of bass strings costs four times as much as a good set of guitar strings. When I find an amp/cab rig I like I generally play 'em till they burn down.Could take years, ain't buying another one!(till i have to) Whereas my guitar player shows up at least twice a month with "THE ONE!!!!" Hey it's only good business. Heh!
