Why are old Peaveys so cheap?

Just scored same bass, same price. It's incredible. We'll just let the label snobs wallow in their....misconceptions.

Why is it every time someone doesn't like a particular brand they are automatically labeled a "snob"? We all have our own preferences and there is nothing wrong with that.

Very true...perhaps that could've been worded better, though sometimes it is a 'snob' thing. There are folks who won't play a Peavey simply because it's a Peavey...I was one of them :)

Of course everyone is entitled to their preferences, whatever they may be.

For me, T-40's, Foundations, certain Forums and a few others, are just about as good as it gets and it cracks me up to me able to grab a truly world class bass for $200 :)

It's because Peavey detractors usually are snobs. Their dislike of the brand isn't backed up by logic or any hands on experience. It's almost always something that was ingrained in them when they were younger. Usually ignorant people told them "Peavey is junk", and the attitude stuck.

Just look at the detractors in this thread. They say Peavey is "unreliable", but offer no explanation. Or they'll criticize ancient Peavey amplifiers - as if that has anything to do with the quality of Peavey guitars.

I guess that I am a snob.
I just don't think that Peavey has any "cool factor" going for it.
I wouldn't drive a Buick either or wear plaid pants with white shoes.
Correction... I don't guess that I am a snob, I know that I am a snob.

As long as there are players who think Peavey has no cool factor, that is great for us. It keeps the price down.

I go to the local Blues Jam every Wednesday night (if I am able to) and I am always in the minority. Of course EVERY bass player there has a Fender and they DO sound good. I am always the only guy with the Peavey.

After I play my 20 minute set, I am always told that I had the best tone, too.

Yes, Fender Jazz basses sound great. It's a familiar sound. I just prefer Peavey basses.

I guess you could say Peavey is the McLovin of the bass world. It's the geeks that always get picked on, but then we are the ones who hire YOU.

I wouldnt consider the Cirrus models to be "cheap".

Old Peavey amps go cheap cause theyre so GD heavy and dont sound good. Dont know about the basses though.

Damn. You got me on a technicality. You're right about both counts ; Cirrus are far from cheap and the old amps are way too heavy for the low power they put out.

There are always the exceptions - As I and others said earlier, for guitars nothing beats the Peavey Classic 30 Tweed.

Old basses - Foundations always come to mind first. To me, a Foundation is : A P / J , and a Rickenbacker all in one bass. For $200 that deadly combination just cannot be beat. Period.

PS - I like SMCD !!!

Hi Five !

I like peavey basses but agree that many do lack in looks. Foundations are mostly boring looking....doesn't bother me but I could see why some pele don't dig their looks
They really don't look like much, true.

I got the bug to pick up a Foundation about two years back, figuring for a hundred bucks or so, it'd be interesting. But all the ones I saw on CL had some kind of problem or something missing or something added and I was turned off by reports here of problems with the trussrods from ham-fisted owners trying to adjust them without the proper tools, or whatever, and I just didn't need that...nor twenty years of fretwear from cheap stainless rounds and all the forty or so other things you encounter in the CL world, which is basically hell at its best. :(

What finished me was realizing that I had lots of better basses and I had already regrettably cluttered my life up with a couple of dozen others that weren't as good and for which I had no use. I just bought them because they were cheap and I was curious. A Peavey would only have fallen into that sad category, "basses I regret."

I'll admit that I do not like Peavey but it is because I tried some of their gear many years ago and was unhappy with it. Once I have a bad experience with something I don't go back.

So you never owned a Foundation. And despite that it's a "bass you regret"??? Uh... ok...

Interesting how in 2 years you've never seen a Foundation that wasn't damaged or problematic. I see Foundations for sale all the time in perfect condition. Bought one myself some months back. Late 80's, perfect condition. Almost mint. You must live in a part of the country where people are prone to ruin things.

Ya, Foundations are definitely "plain" in the cosmetics department. But with that, comes a certain beauty for me personally. I have an appreciation for the "form follows function" design ethic.

There is very little on a Foundation that is not there to serve function, and what is there works really well.

Plus, the early Peavey (and Fender and G&L) guitars harken back to a time when every inch of them was built and/or designed in-house. That originality has intrinsic value to some. And as usual, the earliest versions seem to be the most attractive.

Never said that.

I didn't say that either.

I live in a part of the country where Peaveys simply were reviled and virtually nobody used them or sold them back in the '80s. I've mentioned before how I went for many years in SF and literally never saw a piece of Peavey gear.

So, the old ones are relatively rare and came from somewhere else, usually from flyover country with the huge influx of carpetbaggers during the economic boom years here.

I looked for several months up until I had Invalid Link Removed that effectively ended my playing.

In that time on CL I saw one Foundation that was wrecked, one that some fool had clumsily modded, a hideous blue one some grifter was trying to get more than twice its worth for and a couple of the very late ones in which I had no interest. There was a T-40, but they're simply too heavy for me.

Anyway, as I said, I really don't have a compelling need for an entry-level Peavey, especially not these days when I can't play much.

T-40's are heavy, no denying that...man, they sure do sound good to me though :) Worth doing a mod to lighten the body.

Not being a big fan of the coffee table basses, I personally thing the Foundations are great looking basses. But that's why they make different colored shirts :)
