Why are old Peaveys so cheap?

nothing wrong with them....they just made tons of them! everyone bought peavey gear!! tons of it! peavey made great stuff!!
people are just jealous because peavey cornered the market!! I LOVE PEAVEY!! A GREAT AMERICAN COMPANY!

For one ....there are tons of them around. The current Peaveys are considered cheap and not very playable. So "most" people avoid Peaveys based on misconceptions of quality. The older Peaveys are rock solid and could easily be gigged without a back up. Most of these have already outlasted many of the so called better basses.
You will be able to tell. All the US models will have it listed. With the exception of the Gbass (graphite neck) which used a sticker. Most, if not all imports have BXP listed after the earlier model names.

Peavey isn't selling them for that cheap. My Fury was $275 in 1984. My Foundation S was $550 in 1987. Why are the prices so low? I don't know, but I'd like to get about four more instruments before people figure out how amazing they are.

Foundations and furys are not entry level basses and a more than gig worthy . Very good instruments really. Now the people saying this and that peavey bass are better than any fender bass are going a bit too far IMO . Both companies have made some amazing basses over the years but to say a sarzo is better than a say m miller is just an opinion. Both basses are built extremely well but sound and feel differently. So we may like be more than the other but that's it. I don't own any fenders so I don't care but the defending peavey s like they are some holy texts or something is a little crazy..and once again, I like me some peavers.

That's not what I meant to infer. If anything I'm stating that they're on par. Again, I've owned two MIA Fenders so I'm speaking from direct experience. Tone and level of craftsmanship are equal. The Peavey IMO has the edge in playability because it has more of a Jazz neck.

But I'll say again, it's fine with me if most people think they're crap. That means the prices will stay down! ;) :D

Hmm. Nice shape, nice color (may be refinished) upgraded pickups, hardshell case - $199. That's not a steal, but it's a decent deal.

That's a super nice looking bass. I'm not looking for a bass right now, but if I were, I'd buy it.

I was with you until I read this statement, then you lost me...

I admit to being a Peavey gear snob as a kid...bash Peavey stuff; it's what we did in the early eighties. But we all owned it, and it worked like a champ and never quit. Our bashing wasn't based on quality, we just bashed the gear because EVERYONE bashed Peavey stuff back then. Nobody bought it because it was good gear, we bought it because it was cheap and loud! Now that I'm old enough to not care what others think, I realize what a nice job they really did. I plugged my Rick into an old Peavey guitar amp the other day and it sounded AMAZING, like what everyone thinks a Rick should sound like. Good stuff, and well worth the money, and then some. Sorry Peavey, for all the horrible crap I said about you as a kid. Chalk it up to youthful follower mentality...

I played it for a couple of minutes and really didn't like it at all, although I didn't tell him that. He then played a couple of my MIA Fenders. He didn't say much but I could tell he didn't like them. Just proves that we all have our own preferences and should play whatever we like regardless of what anyone else thinks.

My main reason for not even trying anything Peavey is due to bad experiences with their amps and sound equipment in the early 1980's. Once I am unhappy with something with a brand I never go back.

Well said. I had a couple of the older amps (TKO, mark bass, mega bass) didn't really care too much for them. The T40 seemed ok but the Dyna Bass was much better although the neck did seem flimsy. I had mine for awhile before i went with Kubicki. Most likely due to my Kubicki comparison at the time, the peavey necks seemed flimsy lol. Their older 80's amps seemed to honk more than tonk IMO. The country bands at the time swore by them both the amps and bass'. Tried the foundation bass didn't really care too much for them but not bad for the price.

Haven't tried the Cirrus but it looks nice.

I believe GC used site has a Fretless foundation right now for 179.00. Jump on it!
