Why are old Peaveys so cheap?

My TL-5 has Barts in it. Not a mod I'd personally make, but damn... it's the best sounding fretless 5'er I've ever heard.

I have been watching them but Im holding out for the neck thought models , there a couple hundred more bucks but well worth it. I favor the neck through fretless.
The one I just scored is USA.
Yep, I understand. I do not like lines on my fretless necks either but for the money I paid I think the lines won't bother me...

I think you're correct, though it seems strange. There was a fiver with the Dynabass label that someone said once was only available in Europe. It was right at the end of the production run. I don't remember if it was a unity or not, but it wasn't a natural finish like the koas.
You guys are correct. There was never a Dyna Unity 5-string. There was a Dyna bass 5-string. If you want a Dyna Unity 5-string, the TL-5 is as close as you're going to get.
Per above, the closest you'll get is the TL-5. The Dyna Unity may as well have been called the TL-4. the only real difference are the pickups.
The basses in the photo you linked have koa bodies. If you want a koa body TL-5, then get ready for a super long wait. . I've only seen photos of a koa body TL-5. It belongs to a TB member, and according to him, only 4 were built.
I've been on the "bargain" hunt for a Sarzo and a Cirrus 4. Hoping some Peavey Hater will sell it for the price of a MIM or Squier.
I've never played a Peavey, but I've often questioned what (I think) the OP was asking. I think the points made about getting a quality bass, used, and having next to zero potential loss financially if you wish to sell it is very appealing. Glad to hear Peavey basses have such an enthusiastic fan bass. I surmise that, as was intimated earlier, there's so many recognized bass players who play Fender or Gibson or whatever for whatever reason that those companies do get away with charging a good bit just for the decal on the headstock.
A couple of times a year I get a bug to try to get a T-40, but it usually passes, mainly because they usually come with maple fretboards and I'm a rosewood guy (mostly). The reason I'm interested is because of an artist from the 70's and 80's that I'm kinda surprised no one has mentioned as a Peavey player, and that is JJ Burnel of the Stranglers. Granted, most of his stuff was with a Precision, but I'm sure he also played a T-40 as well.

Good question. I would say that it's not just Peavey that's under rated and a bargain due to a percieved low value. It's interesting that Peavey suffers from this as some of it is made in America which to the large number of China and Asia phobic people out there is usually enough to make something more desirable. I have two Peavey micro bass combos and the Chinese one blows the American made one totally out of the water.
I also have a Millenium bxp 4 string and a Millenium bxpAC 5 string. Both have good build quality with no issues and were cheap. The four is a decent enough player, good for slapping but weak lows wheras the five has bottom end and highs in abundance with it's excellent vfl pickups. The active eq preamp was dreadfull however with harsh mids and hissy highs. I replaced it with an EMG bxp and that bass is 1000 times better. After all that I still havn't really answered your question. I reckon it's down to the fact that other companies such as Gibson and Fender have their gear being used by the stars whereas Peavey have been making solid and effective kit for working pros and semi pros in the background for years providing good value for money. Most people still believe in brand names providing some guarantee of quality and will buy what everyone else seems to use. Marketing and image are very powerful selling tools and Peavey dont have mojo bull#!*! in their favour.

Why are they selling a bass that competes with MIA P's for $200 - that's what this thread is about.
It boils down to image. Most bass players are brand-conscious. Like many motorcycle riders that sneer at any brand but Harley Davidson, most bass players look down on any brand but Fender. You can put a Peavey Fury next to a Fender P-bass and point out how both basses are equal in every way, but most people can't - or won't - hear the facts. Ask one of them why a Fender is superior to a Peavey, and you'll get the same reaction Luke Wilson got when he asked people why they watered the crops with Brawndo.
The import Furys are easy to identify - they have soapbar pickups - one for the Fury II, two for the Fury IV. The Fury model you want will have a split humbucker, just like a P-bass.

Funny you bring that up since HD is an inferior motorcycle in almost every way. Flames a coming! Also, same reason Colt shooters hate Glocks, and on and on.
I met a sound guy yesterday that has replaced all his JBL stuff with Peavey because it works. We agreed that the brand has been tarnished just like Chevy. No matter how good a car they make now, they simply can't overcome the impression left by them with their junk from 70's and 80's. Want a bargain on a car? Go buy a Chevy. Same thing.
Interesting how you show distain for one prejudice while displaying your own; and, yes, prejudice is the "same thing".
edit: I was a motorcycle mechanic for seven years and I have been a registered mechanical engineer for over thirty; I am also an NRA certified instructor and an amateur gunsmith (my truck license plate is "M1911" and I own two HD's). I have been playing music in bands since 1963 so I feel qualified to say that there is no inferior motorcycle or firearm or bass among the major players. There are only different tastes; different strokes for different folks.
I must be bipolar. Part of me wants Peavey to get the recognition they deserved for delivering quality US made basses for us to enjoy. But, part of me hopes they never do. I would love to buy up as many as these quality basses as possible.
