Why are tuner pedals so expensive?

Snarks are great. I have used the same TU-2 for over 20 years, I love it and it's well worth the money to me.

If I'm dropping in and don't want to bring my pedalboard, I use a Snark and it works just fine.

The tolerances for dial tone frequency aren't very tight.
And that's for a land line. Forget cell phones.
And your brain has to sort out the 440 side of the dial tone.

F1, 1st fret on the E string is 43.65 Hz.
F3, 10th fret on the G string is 174.61 Hz.
F4, (can you get there on a four string bass?) is 349.23 Hz.

The 350 Hz part of a dial tone can be as low as 340 Hz.
The high end tolerance for 350 Hz can be off by even more.
That equates to 170 Hz, and 40 Hz.
When low E is 41.2 Hz, you could be off by a whole note or more tuning by dial tone.

If it works for you, fine.
Just saying 12 bucks for clip on Snark or a free app on your smart phone makes a lot of sense.
Even if it's not very accurate, it'll be closer and easier than a dial tone.
