Why aren't PJ basses more popular and more available?

You lose the tonal options when wired in series. I have a j bass with a push pull pot that lets me do change to series or parallel, and in just doesn't sound that good. You get a bit more low miss but it's nothing like a p bass.

The G&L SB-2 looks interesting and it's a Fender design. Anyone know if these are any good?

They are great. I had one a while back, but because of economic pressures I had to let it go. I found another a couple of years ago. It has the added tone control the original SB-2 did not. It is a factory option. It is my favorite of my 15 basses and the one that usually goes to gigs. The other PJ I have is a Fender Areodyne. I Like it, but not as much as the SB-2T. (the T designates a tone control)

I really like the neck! Its really a pleasure to play it! Very smooth. It looks and feels amazing.The graphite molding finish is impressive. The neck feels super solid and you can tell that it will give you the stiffness, stability and sustain a wooden necks physically can'’t. A totally different kind of animal! Astonishing fretwork. A very unique, clean/clear almost Piano like sound on my Fender, perfect uniform all over the neck. Honestly I don’'t have a single negative thing to tell you about it . + A great customer service. It will make your bass a one of a kind for sure. Regards...

A matter of tradition.

I too prefer a P/J over a P bass or a J bass with the 2 J pickups wired traditionally in parallel.

However I discovered I like 2 J pickups wired in series even more than a P/J, and that is even more uncommon to find as stock option.

So my question would be, why as good as non J style basses that comes with the 2 J's wired in series, as a stock option?

There are plenty of wiring schemes that do just this -thankfully!

I find I don't use my single tone control much so I set it so that it offers the four wiring options, that you describe and that suits me for my basic tones which I can always tweak via the amp's tones
