So, today, I read thru parts of the latest version of hundreds of threads on this site where the OP has JAQ (Just Asking Questions) trolled other posters with leading sentences like:

"Help Me Understand (basses with more than 4 strings or 21 frets/basses with active electronics/basses with transparent finishes over multiple species of wood/singlecut basses/basses that cost more than mine does/Jazz/Slap/Tapping)", as tho they don't know exactly what they're doing. Or, "Name as many songs as you can with (Insert bass type from the above list here _________ ) on the recording", as tho songs recorded when the instrument was in early infancy should be the standard now that the instrument is in its later infancy.

What I've noticed is that the reverse is almost nonexistent. There are exceptions, but on average, the posters who own 5+ string basses don't feel a need to throw stones at 4-string players. The posters who can read don't sit around saying tab is nonessential. Active bass owners aren't here bashing passive basses. Fodera and Alembic owners don't bash Ibanez basses. Sadowsky and AC owners don't bash Fenders. Owners of basses with a clear finish over nice looking woods don't slyly attack basses with opaque paint. Jazzmen don't bash rockers. Progmen don't bash rockers. Fingerstyle and slap players don't bash flatpickers.

I personally have yet to see a thread with any of the following titles:

"Help me understand Flatwound strings and/or mutes ahead of the bridge"
"Help me understand 4-string basses in this modern era/Why it matters what Jaco needed"
"Help me understand car paint on a musical instrument made of wood/2 or 3-piece body with no separate top"
"Help me understand the point of the 4-minute song with only one solo of one chorus from one musician"
"Help me understand flatpicking".

Nobody does that.

I guess what I'm asking here is for those of you who have seen this over and over again, is to help ME understand why it happens at all, when the highest selling instruments out there are still probably 4-string passive Fenders. You'd think the popularity alone would be enough to satisfy anyone. I suppose I could ask why the moderators can't sniff out a troll as quickly as I can and close the thread, but I won't ask that question.

I'm not just interested in troll psychology; I'm just as interested in why it seems to have made its way into a site dedicated to music and the instruments used to make music. I hope some of you can offer answers. Thanks so much.

All I can say is that your post is the goldangest trollingest post I've seen in a long while. You mention psychology, I suggest you may want to look up a Freudian Defense Mechanism called Projection.

None of that. You go count the threads that I mention are here a lot versus those that I listed that I said are not here a lot, and you'll find I'm right. every word I typed is true.

There is trolling going on everywhere in varying degrees, who cares? If I don't like the topic I just don't bother with it. And peace brother.

Peace to you as well!

The rest of this post isn't really directed at you, because you've opted out, and that's fine. But Talkbass is one of the finest, if not THE finest site dedicated to basses and bass playing. I admit that it does bother me when I see troll threads that would never be tolerated or even supported were they on a French horn site or a violin site, or an oboe site.

Most of the time, I don't bother. But I've always been curious about the why, and why there's so rarely the same in reverse.

I'm primarily a double bassist who owns bass guitars and occasionally still gets work with them. I do see a bit of a popularity food chain in the DB forum, but I can say without hesitation that there is no tolerance for snobbery where the instrument itself is concerned. Nobody looks at anyone crazy when they use steel strings instead of the traditional guts, or when their newly commissioned bass is going to have graphite reinforcement in the neck (yeah, that happens now with some DBs), or a carbon fiber tailpiece, etc. Nobody bashes readers there. Musical literacy is not just tolerated- it's expected. Nobody tries to tab their way thru a jazz or bluegrass standard. And very few plywood bass owners ask "what's up with these carved basses?". Some basses with three strings, some with four, five, six.. I think I saw one with seven a while back. Nobody asked why.

I am a professional double bass player too and if you let me say sir, the real answer to your question would be pretty much against the rules of this forum. Of course Jaco only needed 4 strings ( and I have quite a lot of them) and single cut 5+ string coffie table basses are blah blah blah... The electric bass has a very short history and most of the people are still very connected with the original design (that style wise fits to the contemporary blues - pop - rock etc music) and don't care about the other stuff. I love my vintage Fender bass as much as my other basses (includng the singlecut pictured below that I played just a couple of hours ago) and after all, it's all in the fingers. Cheers!

Oh, I'm not a pro. I don't earn enough on gigs to pay my bills. I brought up the DB because modern luthiers are still pushing the envelope there after almost half a millennium...

...which is why I find it difficult to imagine how anyone could see such a young instrument as being finished evolving.

Man, that's a gorgeous bass. Enjoy it in good health! My only currently assembled solidbody is made from MIA Fender parts, with a pro body refinish. It is my Holy Grail Fender, period.

Bass: N(P)BD! (MIA FrankenFender content)
Period-correct tuners: New (to me) Old Tuners... found the White Whale

After reading this thread I came across the other one which inspired me to post it. :smug:

That thread was kind of the final straw. OP started out by saying basically that he has no use for the B other than the lowest five notes, and then poses a question that assumes everyone else uses (or doesn't) their B the same way. It was a straight up troll job, one of dozens I've seen in this forum.

He could have said, "I like 4-string basses only- who's with me?" and that would have been sufficient.

"Help me understand Flatwound strings and/or mutes ahead of the bridge"

I understand it. I just can't explain it. It's kind of like buying a $20k harp and putting it in your dining room. It's just hard to explain.

I've used flats before. I've used a mute (a sponge) before. My point here is that some assume that because the journey to their own sound in their style of music is complete, that the same is true for everyone else and everyone else's musical tastes/styles.

I find this thread a bit more trollish than that one.

As I said earlier, every word in my original post is true. I'm always willing to have any detractor address the actual content of the post itself and tell me what parts they think are trolling. As of this post, none of the detractors have done that- just leveled accusations of trolling and of (lol) projection.

I have no currently assembled fivers or active basses. I have two DBs and one FrankenFender. But I'm not among those saying anything else is too much.
