Why basswood???

Rosewood , Ebony and Maple make for a HEAVY bass body.
Not to mention, many of these woods are becoming rare. So much so that the harvesting of rosewood is regulated. See info about CITES here on TB.
Anyway, those woods can easily make a bass in the 15+ lb rang. And as their tone is usually very bright, they don't sound as full and even as the more oftenly used species.

Yes and cost. Maple not so much, but definitely rosewood and ebony.

Another thing to think about is that we are indeed running out of wood. The world is overpopulated, and all 8 billion plus of us are looking for wood from which to build things. What they've done in the rainforest is going to bite us in the ass, because the rainforest is considered the lungs of the earth.

I'm using epoxy over my Glarry "Burlywood" body. It is a low VOC, low fume, low smell variety that I've used for artistic purposes. I've only done it once on a bass but not only is it a hard, protective surface, its just thick enough to give the gives a little something extra to bite. Cures hard enough for countertop replacements and pretty smooth if you do it right.
