Why couldn't I tell the difference?

Well, the treble response of those two cabs is quite similar, and that's really a big part of the SWR classic tone.
You would be able to tell more of a difference when you crank them in a mix.. the Goliath would bury the Triad completely IMO and IME when you start to crank. However, the general tonality is not that completely different to my ear.... the Triad might extend a little deeper on the low end, but not much.

Your Triad is a 4-ohm. The 4x10 was probably an 8-ohm model. Most any single 8-ohm cab would probably be at a bit of a disadvantage against a 4-ohm because your amps power level could have been diminished enough to throw off accurate comparisons.

Yup, the tonality is similar, but the 4x10 has double the speaker area, so will be a much louder cab in general.
