Junior high school band director knew that I could read because I played 'cello, so he asked me to play bass in the school jazz band. And he was a family friend, so my parents couldn't say no.

i was playing guitar since seven years when i bought this cheapo "bass", in order to record some lil' basslines under my guitar noise. Then....... This thing took me !! And three weeks later, i sold the Les paul, the Marshall, and bought a bass combo and a warwack...

I had been playing guitar for several years, and joined a regularly working band that was basically 3 guitar players and a drummer. The band owned a beat to hell Steiny 4 string. I began volunteering to play it on tunes I wasn't singing on. Really enjoyed it.
Though I am still primarily a guitar player, I love playing bass. Whole other world and thought process. Playing both really helps my overall musicianship. Plus, as we all know, there is a much greater need for decent bassists than guitarists.

I played guitar for about 10 years, and then started filling in on bass at church. I started on a borrowed right-handed (I'm a lefty) Ibanez les paul-looking bass, got a lefty MiM fender jazz a few months later when I realized that I rather enjoy playing bass, and eventually quit the band I was playing guitar in and went to bass full-time. Sold my guitar amp (a really nice bogner), but kept most of my guitars. I've got a decent gig-worn SG that's about 12 years old now, a MiM telecaster that sounds alright, and a taylor acoustic. I break 'em out every once in a while, get bored pretty quickly, then go back to playing my bass.
It's interesting... I interact with the band differently when I'm on bass than when I'm on guitar. If I'm playing guitar with a group, I basically only listen enough to make sure we're all together, but I mostly expect the rest of the band to stay with me. On bass, I pay much more attention to the whole band, and try to stay locked in with everybody. You'd think I'd approach it the same way regardless of what instrument I'm playing, but I've noticed that not to be the case...
Oh yeah, I've made more money and had more gigs playing bass than I ever did playing guitar...

i played guitar on and off since i was 12. then at 14 a few friends wanted to start and band and they said "oiy u wanna be in a band", so i said sure and then they said i needed to play bass. at first i thought, o no bass, thats boring. but after a month of playing i fell in love, best instrument.
now i play as much and as difficult as i can to improve my skills.
