Why did you start playing bass?

When I was in college, I made some spending money selling.. Uhhh, "recreational materials".. There was a guy I didn't know well who wanted me to front him a QP.. He gave me his Rick 4001 as collateral. I never saw that guy again, and after that bass sat in my closet for a month, I decided to try and play it. I went down to a local pawnshop and got an old Fender Bassman amp, and that was that...

My brother came into my room with a Primus CD, and he said, "listen to this". So I did and I loved. From that point on I knew I had to play bass.

I watched a Metallica performance and saw Jason Newsted (bass idol ) going nuts, head banging, picking that bass like he was insane and I loved it, the sound drew me in and the head banging had me hooked. Then I started to explore the bass more, looked into the greats like JPJ and The Ox and that was it, I was hooked.

Also the guitar never appealed to me, just never saw the fascination with it. Ive always wondered how many others are like me here who can play bass but have no idea how to play guitar.

I started about four years ago. My buddy and I used to play football all the time. One day after school we were and he caught a touchdown pass. During his celebration he threw out his back. After the injury it was no more physical activity for a while, so he picked up the guitar. Right after that, his uncle's pawn shop burnt down so he brought all of his items that weren't damaged home. One of them happened to be a Fender bass. So I figured since my buddy picked up guitar, I'd pick up the bass. Fell in love with it and I've been thumpin strong for about four years now.

My first impressions of bass came from Rudy Sarzo(QR), Steve Harris(IM) and Nikki Sixx(MC).
I watched, listened and was in complete awe of a) the sound. that bottom end. the rhythm, groove, feel of it and, b) the way they interacted with the other band members onstage and the crowd.
Nikki Sixx is my God. Despite the obvious disapproval of some of u. He wrote, played, produced and did it with such style and poise that he hooked me.
From that day on, guitarists and singers were just there to make up the numbers. hahahaha.

I was 15 yrs old, went to my first concert and saw Led Zeplin.
The next night saw Black Sabbath. The following week end got my first bass, a used Gibson ( SG style - EBO? - EB3? ) for $165, man I wish I still had that bass...lol

Yeah, I am fairly adequate in the power chord category. Just hate not being able to do the job properly. If I spent more time playing guitar I know I could be good at it.
But why would any bass player WANT to play guitar instead? If I had more time, I would play more bass. lol

I was a Cornet player until I totally captivated by bass at age 14. Never looked back, it's the sound man!

I picked up a guitar a year ago and messed around with it, got pretty good.

Theni wanted to enter are schools battle of the bands and during a pratice me and the bassist swtich insturments ,as his main insturment was guitar, and i knew bass was for me!

I was just so empty, until i started playing and its a lovely feeling when the bass comes in and everything sounds so full!

Honestly? For the first time I did, it was because both my brother and I were taking guitar lessons, and he was way better than me. One day, my teacher brought in his five-string Yamaha, and I picked it up and started playing some RHCP right off the bat. So my parents bought the bass off of him, since it was for sale anyways.

Yup, I'm one of those guys who sucked at guitar!

But, you know those after-school specials, where the popular kid loses a bet and has to take the ugly girl to prom, and then finds out that she has a great personality? Yep, that's pretty much what it was like. Didn't know what I was missing until I played.

Lessons ended shortly thereafter, the bass sat in a closet for three years. And then Guitar Hero 2 came out. or, at least, the Demo. And I was captivated by a song called YYZ, just the guitar line. A friend comes over to play co-op, he plays the guitar section, and I play the bass part, and I see that the bass has almost twice as many notes.

The rest, as they say, is history.

I really prefer the bass to the guitar, though. If someone asks why, honestly, I just find it a lot more tactile, but I love the boom. I guess that's why I would always watch the bass players in bands in my adolescent youth. I still noodle around on the guitar a bit, but I love my bass so much more.

My brother is an awesome fingerstlye guitarist now, though. But, to each his own. We'll see what we can do when my fretless sixer arrives. It'll be kind of weird to hook up now that I'm shipping out to college, though.

First of all, brother, Tuba IS cool! lol

I have played Tuba for about 20 years now... studied it in college, music teacher now... My HS jazz band at my new job did not have a bassist... I had wanted to play bass for years, even borrowed one at one point, but last November, I started and now I love it... Played all year with the jazz band, played at ball games with the pep band, and started playing at church a few months ago... Gonna look for some guys to jam with when I get back from vacation...
