Why did you start playing bass?

Personally, I started after hearing the bass line in Roundabout by Yes. That is an amazing piece of music!
I started on cello. The middle school band teacher asked me to play bass in the jazz band, so I got a used Fender and learned to play it during summer vacation by reading through my cello etude books. I continued to play cello through high school, but bass became my main instrument when I got to college because I was getting more interested in jazz.

A year after I joined a seniors ukulele group, about 5 years ago, the leader asked if anyone would like to take up the bass to fill in our sound. I played guitar for almost 50 years and was often told I should play bass because I had good feel and rhythm, but I didn't want to be encumbered by a large electric bass, forget a stand up bass. When I discovered bass ukes and mini bass guitars, I went for it.

Two moments: 1. A blues band consisting of Detroit Police Officers called The Blue Pigs played an assembly at my elementary school. There was a tall man playing the bass in a police uniform with a red Fender, and he looked so cool. 2. A band showed up to a gig I was playing. They had no bass player, but they had a Peavey bass. I said I would play if they wanted. I have been a bass player since that moment in 1997.
Bought a used Fender Squier Bronco Bass 12 years ago. Started playing it. Took lessons and all. I still have it. When I bought my 1st Lakland used, I couldn’t believe the difference. What a completely wonderful playing bass. Played with a bunch of guys who taught me a lot. Now I play for me.
My buddies were starting a band and needed a bass player.
I said I want to play guitar, they said no we need a bass.

Cause I was the worst lead guitarist in a new band? Probably, if I’m honest.
