Why do/did I save this stuff?!

this was something I did last summer during the major covid lockdown, went through so much of that stuff and just donated it to local places that wanted it. Community Music Center, Art School, etc. They like that stuff and have people who are interested in looking at it.

At one time, I had the first 10 or so issues of Bass Player magazine. It doesn't matter what they are worth, I should have kept those.

Upon my retirement one of the first things I did was gift about twenty years of Bass Player to the son of a colleague, along with a Magnatone X-10 Hurricane.

Ha ha! I moved house recently and tried to put my collection of 'bassist' magazines in the bin. Couldn't do it. Reminds me far too much of my teenage years lusting after gear I couldn't afford. Great days?!

Has anyone else besides me collected magazines, brochures, flyers etc. over the years (before the internet) and never threw them out? Why do I keep ... Why have I kept this stuff? It's useless - and reminds me of a time when ALL of the gear in these brochures was Waaay too expensive for me to afford. View attachment 4497799

i had all the Sports Illustrated Bathing Suit issues for 23 years until my son who was mad at me cut up a few of them. We pictured them. We also saved a large bunch of MotherEarth News mags issues for quite a while. Looking at the way things are heading, we should have kept them.

Most people throw them out. I recycle them when possible.
Still others wait until they die and make their kids throw it out.

I used to have a lot of Bass Player magazines but in my old age I find that I need to downsize and get rid of stuff I never use. I had a lot of 1960's full color Fender catalogs that I got directly from Fender (when started playing in the 60's and was drooling over the Fender basses) but my mom dumped those years ago. I think they're probably worth around $400-$500 nowadays.

I used to work in a music store around the turn of the century (late 90 - early 2000s). You were "that guy". We would nudge each other and say "There's that guy again. He never buys anything. He just acts like he's going to buy something and then takes a brochure. I bet he has a pile of those things. Wonder what he'll do with them in 20 years...."

Now we know. You'll spread them out on the floor and post them in the interwebz.

I really like that stuff. I have hundreds of copies of Bass Player magazine (as well as a monthly hard copy subscription). I also have hundreds of copies of Modern Drummer Magazine as well as another non-music magazine related to another interest of mine. I enjoy going through back issues of magazines with a cup of coffee on a lazy afternoon.

Anyone interested in getting rid of that stuff just PM me; one bassist's junk is another bassist's treasure!

I did recently ditch a lot of stuff....But am happy to find some of them...reminds me of good, but much poorer times.

I would pour over them dreaming of rigs or basses I wanted.

I'm with Zoffy. I have hundreds and hundreds of issues of guitar for the practicing musician, guitar world, guitar school, plus some old guitar players. I also have almost every single issue of the original bass player run, just missing one here and there. None of these are going anywhere, they don't take up much room & I know what's where. As Zatoichi would say, " So there! "

got rid of most of the bass related stuff like that years ago. gave to a friend who is even more of a packrat than me.

I'll admit, I do some enjoyment looking at those older printed pulications and brochures, it brings me back to an easier, more pleasant and naive state of being for me.

Have a crap ton of firearm related publications also, again its the thing where I like to pick them up and look at them, but im getting to age and time where I need to start cleaning out more than I am. Those firearm publications will probably get dropped off at a gun club or something.

I subscribed to Guitar Player since 1985 and saved all of them. I subscribed to Bass Player since it started…and saved all of those too. I also collected the Fender Frontline publications back in the day. I finally started getting rid of it all when the kids stuff started taking over my storage spaces. I gave away a few issues when friends had a particular interest in one of the featured players in the issue. The last of them (about three boxes full) I gave to the local music store and they put them in their "back issue box" and sold them off for a buck each.
I only have about three or four old issues of Bass Player now, and I have a 1982-1983 Fender catalog that introduced the Vintage Reissue series. I have a Jan. 1983 AVRI Jazz that I bought in about 86 or 87 that it kind of goes with, so I will hang on to that too.

My attempts to downsize and simplify my life continue. It is a process that I am trying to embrace more each year.

Yes, I have a box full up in the attic, bunch of mags from the 80s. My grandkids can have them someday to see what pop pop did with his time when he was a teen, lol!

I did a serious purge a few months back. Up until then I had all of the issues (and a lot of other unneeded stuff) I'm now enjoying 40 cubic yards of space I didn't have before!

For many years I went to the NAMM show and would collect all this stuff. When I would come home my wife would roll her eyes and say "another bag of crap". I still have all of that stuff.

I was one of those brochure collectors back in the 60's. I still have a lot of them, in a box in the attic, next to boxes of Guitar Player magazines, etc., unseen for 20 or so years. I hang on to them for various reasons; maybe nostalgia being one. I keep hoping they're worth something, but never bothering to find out.
