Why do people do this? Sell things that are not.

Not touching the etiquette debate. But, for the op's original question. I'd bet most people don't know what they have.
The person they bought it from might have told them it was a real Fender.

We here on Talkbass are bass NERDS while most people even other bass players are not. They're just players and could care less
about the minute details of the instrument they play.

I'm also curious what the opinion is on this type of FrankenBass? Can it actually even be called a Fender of even Squier?
Say the body,neck,tuners,neck plate are Fender(not from the same bass either) but, everything else has been changed with non Fender parts. Can it still be called a Fender?
I'm thinking about selling a FrankenJazz I put together with the above parts and don't know what I would call it if I sold it.
Fender parts Jazz bass is what I would say. And fully disclose what is what.

One of the amazing things about this Forum is the level of expertise, particularly regarding FSO's. I can spot a fake Ric in about 1/10th of a second, but Fenders? Not so much. Given the sheer number of variants, re-issues, licensed parts, and straight up counterfeits floating around, this would be my first stop trying to authenticate ANY FSO. I've been on TB since 2014, and seen literally hundreds of potential buyers be counseled for or against buying basses on the recommendations of posters who have forgotten more than I will ever know about Fenders. Given the high dollar value of some Vintage basses, and the sophistication of the "relic" techniques available to fake one, I'd be wary as hell without first passing it through the TB Hive Mind Filter, which can identify some incredibly arcane details proving that the sales pitch matches reality. Lots of scammers out there, and lots of just plain ignorance, so Buyer Beware is paramount. I hope the OP realizes that the Snark Masters represent a small minority here on TB, which is why I still love this place after 12 years. Feel free to hit that "ignore" button as a worst case scenario, I'm guessing nearly everyone here has at least a couple of those going, I'm probably on somebody's list too.

I absolutely hate my snark, I'm sure master snarks are no better at finding what string I'm tuning.

Thing is, if asking a newb question (in the opinion of some) or making an observation that's been made before, is considered "trolling", then let he who has cast the first stone..... And who get's to decide what questions are unworthy of repeating, or made in bad faith? A Forum that imposes that kind of arbitrary standard, as defined by the most combative or otherwise "sick and tired of that topic" member, is not one I'd care to visit. There is a simple expedient to avoiding threads you find repetitive, misinformed, or "trollish: Don't read them or respond to them. Seems pretty simple. And again, you only have to hit that "ignore" button once, and anybody you find annoying gets muted, for you at least. :cool:

I once sold a bass. I had it listed here on TB. It had some "famous" pickups in it. I traded it away to a fellow. Years later, I had a TBer reach out to me about the bass. Turns out the current owner was selling it as a bass once played by said "famous" player (and asking a premium). I quickly corrected the history for the TBer.

If it’s a bot, how would it know the bass was sold here at the TB classifieds almost a decade ago?

Which is why I’d not judge the content of the question, just the length of time the person (if it is a person) has had with the forum. The issue is the rash of these one post and gones that are obviously automated accounts.

Yeah, I built a frankenbass putting a Fender neck on a Squier body. But I could easily see it ending up being sold down the line by someone who doesn't know the full story and thinks they're selling a full Fender.

I’d argue that all the “gatekeepers” here display hubris and self importance. Everyone was very eager to jump on someone because they didn’t use the forum exactly right. Let the moderators do the moderating.

I’m weird. I assume the best, and then let people prove/disprove it with their actions, not the other way around.

Just for me PERSONALLY, my mental state wouldn’t be great if I always assumed the worst in people.

But again, that’s just my own viewpoint. I’d rather be hopeful but wrong, than hopeless and right.
