I've played a lot in my life so far - 25 years and counting - and I feel like I'm always going through different phases... one year I could be gigging an insane amount - the next hardly at all... now I'm really focussing on improving my musicianship (timing, harmony, song writing) and getting better at recording... I'm a dad now and very busy as a writer so I just try and play bass for fun - which if it becomes a job can just make it feel like hard work! Saying that much like DW I want to get my butt kicked and improve - sure it's great to get a compliment after a gig but I'd rather hear it from a band mate than a member of the audience - though I'm not dissing them - they are the ultimate judge of what you are playing 0 if it isn't getting them grooving an empty dance floor is worth a 1000 notes... that is if you're playing funky stuff - jazz is a whole other kettle of fishola!

Keep playing no matter what - give up and you'll regret it!

The only reason I picked up a bass and joined a band in the first place was for the joy of playing, the main thing is it has to be fun or what's the point. If you're in it just for the compliments then maybe you're doing it for the wrong reasons. Is it time for you to pack it in? Maybe, only you can decide that but talk to the rest of the band and see how they're feeling about things, maybe you're not alone. As far as playing the same songs over and over I look at it this way, I may hate playing them at rehearsal but when I see an audience enjoying them I play them like I wrote them. To me there's nothing better than seeing hot women dancing to music we're playing. Ooo baby.
