Why do we sell our Musicman Stingray?

I sold my Stingray 5 fretless because while it had a gorgeous tone unplugged, that tone did not come through plugged in. It was also a bit soft in the mix. So I sold it and made a Warmoth Jazz fretless. I sold my EB Stingray because my pre-EB sounded much better. I sold my pre-EB because I got divorced and had no furniture; that one I miss. I did get an ATK to replace it, and it's been really good to me, so I don't miss my old 'Ray too much.....

They have a distinctive sound, might stand out too much for certain music. Otherwise they are top quality instruments.

I sold mine because I got a Sterling, which is tiny bit lighter.
I dont get folks taht dont liek the "clank". You do know there is an EQ on that thing right? Dial up some bass, or dial back some treble.
I also did not feel that the ray was ever heavy, it was just nice to have a lighter bass with the pickup switching and a maple board. The 1 pound less weight was just a bonus.
If I wanted a more natural bass sound this might not be the bass for me. I like the MM tone a lot though. I never could understand the weirdos that change the pickups or the electronics. It's like getting a 69 Camaro and putting a different engine in it!

I prefer the Sterling too, but no matter how it's EQ'd, it has "clank." It's the MM sound.

I made the mistake of selling mine once for a Fender '57 RI. Although the fender was great, I always missed that ray. I have since replaced it, and won't be making that mistake again.

I agree - Stingray necks are narrow in terms of string spacing, but have a deep profile front to back. Maybe people are talking about the latter when they say that the neck was too thick for their liking.

I've owned two and sold both. One Trick Pony IMO, but very got at that one trick.

Mine is on the block because I think I've finally decided that I just don't get along with active electronics. Although every time I pick it up lately I wonder if I will regret my decision. Neck feels great. Real quality build.

I have to disagree with that. I've got an American Jazz and it plays much easier then my stingray. There's a noticeable difference in the thickness.

They have very good resale value, there is a good market for them and they are easy to come by if you want to get another one later. Makes for an easy sell.

Its neck just didn't feel right, for me. I love Stingrays and miss mine lots....Just could not get past the neck profile.

I always avoided them for their reputation of being clanky, heavy, etc. I am pleasantly surprised that my single H does a gret job with classic rock, oldies, and even Motown! It takes a little dialing in, and some broken-in flats, but I find it weighs less than my Js or Ps. The look is an acquired taste, and it is true that mine sounds better in a band situation than practicing alone.

Sold my first one because it was fretless (traded, actually, towards my second one)...

Sold my second because I was convinced I wanted a 7 string bass (if I could junk-punch myself in the past, I'd do it every day). Got rid of an immaculate 91 that was lightweight and awesome for a heavy, piece of ....... conklin groove tool. I'm still mad! :scowl:

Sold my third because I just plain didn't like it.

Still miss the second and will eventually get a 5 string one. It's a dream bass that I've never had.

I must've gotten the pick of the litter Stingray because I don't seem to have any of the problems that everyone else claims. The only thing different about mine is that the finish was peeling off and I had it refinished with nitro, but other than that it's stock.

Even my P-bass loving local recording engineer asks me to bring the Stingray out for sessions, and my bandmates are always ticked if I use something else. That includes a really nice Fodera that a friend let me borrow once.

All of that having been said, I am having a custom made with a J/MM setup and a lighter weight body. I have no beef with my Stingray, but a local luthier frend of mine needs a showcase bass for a show he's doing this fall and offered me a RIDICULOUS deal if I had him build one for me.
