Why do we still use amps?

Personally I like to hear myself on stage so I like to have a bass amp up there.

As I get older , I become more lazy when it's time to load gear to a gig..This year I bought an Ampeg Pf350 class D head and recently I got a used Harley Benton 2x10 bass cab for 75€ . Enough volume to hear myself on a regular stage. I still keep my two big Hartke cabs and the big and heavy HA3500 bass head. It sounds awesome and somtimes you need a big rig.

I have a Sansamp and most of the times I send a signal from it to FOH and I use the amp for stage volume.

One gig several years ago at a winery, one of my previous bands was doing a set amongst several other bands for a benefit, and luckily for everyone, I showed up with my rig, and my 2 12" passive monitors, and our guitarist had brought a small PA and 2 passive monitors that ended up serving as the PA for the entire event, as the venue didn't think to provide one and the headlining band thought it would be provided. Also, they got really lucky that was one of the few times I showed up extra early, because I got a bit lost trying to find the place, no signal on my phone, so no GPS, and finally stumbled upon it whereupon I learned about the PA or lack thereof. Turned out to be a fun show.

We had a gig where the “concert venue” was shut down by the health inspector and the backup venue was a coffee shop with two mains on sticks and a monitor the soundman pulled out of the other venue to make this work.

The soundman adjusted levels by walking on stage and adjusting the amps. He had me so loud it was the first and only time I’ve felt a tube bass head (Traynor YBA200) start to brown out.

ROADIES LOVE AMPEG!!

The "less is more" philosophy is just a symptom of the decomposition of rock music from a generation that wants to bring "Alexa" in as their new hipster lead vocalist!

In my rockin' roll world flexibility is key!

Didn't understand the part about roadies. If have enough money to hire roadies, this post has absolutely nothing to do with you and your experiences. I wanted to hear the opinion of independent / underground musicians that do regular gigs and carry their own gear on a plane, a van or a car. ;)

Most of the guys that have replied here have reasonably sized rigs for monitoring purposes and are responsible for their own setup and sound. I've never seen a wedding band arrive with a trailer and roadies. I see no problem in carrying a cab and an amp 2 days a week, and for restaurant, corporate, wedding etc gigs there will probably be no sound guy, no big PA subs and so on, so there's no choice.

I was more concerned about the typical rock and metal venues, that usually have a decent PA and will always take a DI signal from your amp and no matter how awesome your cabinet is, you'll probably be the only one who actually cares about it.

"RODIES LOVE AMPEG" was an old tounge in check bumper-sticker that is about humor as the one guy OBVIOUSLY picked up on rather than the droll relevance of the question!

I’ve posted this before ... this is on the stage wall at one of the main downtown venues we play, the place is small and caters to tourists that are there to soak in the local sounds over drinks, a wall of wail is NOT what the venue wants, selling libations IS.
