Why does the bass player still stand in back?

No one listed stage diver avoidance yet? Meh. I stood in back, reciting the Litany Against Fear. Stage fright wasn't psychological, but kinetic. I will face my fear. Elbows and spinning jump kicks will pass over me and not through me. For I am very smol, and Jersey's best dancers are very large.

Lot of truth to that. I used to work with a guy from the Allman Bros and he thought the bass player should always go nearest the high hat to keep the best time.

In that thinking, there is an admission that the bassist is the timekeeper for the band, and the whole band relies on him. I say this because a lot of us downgrade how we think of our position in the band (just the bass player), but we're more important than most band members will admit, or maybe even know. For instance, no single instrument can cause a train wreck faster than the bass.
