I been playing SVT / 8x10 forever and LOVE them, granted I have a DBX160A in there that gives me 'my sound', but still.

Am I just ignorant or something?

Ampeg vs pretty much everything else is the battle of the circuits; do you like the warm, slightly boomy sound of Ampeg tubes or the cleaner, but slightly colder solid-state sound of GK or Markbass (I know MB makes tube stuff too, but the all-SS LMII seems to be the hot ticket for MB lovers).

Ampeg is a very specialized niche with a very love-it-or-hate-it sound. Even in the all-tube market you can look at Mesa, Eden, Aguilar, and a number of other makers I'm not thinking of for clean, sparkly tube goodness; "The Fridge" is a very acquired taste.

Ampeg's are great. I've owned an SVT Classic and B2R-E.
I sold them because my needs changed but definitely not because they were an inferior product.
I think those who hate probably had one bad experience or first impression and never went back. Never let a hater be the judge of something you've been eyeing or already own.
I own products from several manufactures...there's a hater for each one I sure. Their opinions don't affect my personal experience with the same gear they're hating on. You shouldn't let it bother you. At the end of the day, Ampeg will be fine.

yea..... I listened to a lot of 'your bands' that everyone has links to and a lot of it is somewhere totally different than where I'm at.

It's cool and all, and I think a lot of the 'high end' guys are going for something totally different than I would.

At this point I am just total bottom, I have my bass tune to "G", and the only thing I found that I liked to hold that was the 8X10. Last time out, I was running a pair of 8X10 and the DBX and the low was amazing live, completely bridged the gap between the drums and guitar!

The Ampeg sound is where it's at for bass amplification, for alot of folks.

The only tarnish on them now, is they are made in Asia, all production has been moved overseas. It's now 'bye American', not 'buy American'.

Plenty of used US models out there to choose from.

Can anyone tell me when Ampeg officially moved shop overseas?

I do like my SVT II pro, SVT 8x10 and SVT 6x10. All US made by the way. I wouldn't mind a Mesa 400 though. The Ampeg is twice the weight and NOT twice the tone of the 400.

I used to have an svt 5 pro. I've heard some negative stuff about it but I definitely dug it.

I do however like those heads a lot more, especially the 5 pro, when I have either my guyatone pedal comp or presonus acp22 comp with it.

I can understand to a degree.I love Ampeg and always have. But there are a lot of angry people,Ampeg lovers included how the idiot CEO who runs them sold out this great American company to the Vietnamese to now put out the subpar crap they are putting out now.It is a damn shame,and it will cost them a lot of customers.:scowl:

Yea, the compressors REALLY make I difference, I feel. With out my 160A, it's just okay.

I think the reason why so many people hate Ampeg is the same reason people hate Fender. It's just a pride issue. I mean Ampeg is a pillar in the bass community and has one of the biggest names on the market. It takes a great product to get to that status. IMO Ampegs put out a great product.

This coming from a Gallien-Krueger enthusiast too.:hiding:

They moved overseas to increase profits - plain and simple. Why else does a company change anything they do? :)

They cost too much and they only make one sound, and they overrate the hell out of the wattage on their solidstate amps. All but two of their cabs sound like crap to me (The 4x10HLF and the 6x10 sound great).

There are just better buys for tube heads and most of them are lighter and can make more sounds than Ampeg can. For solid state heads, they're anemic.

My hate is mostly because they are overpriced though.
