Why doesn't everybody like exactly the same amps?

I can't really complain against ampeg; I've owned most of the Pro series as well as a SVT-CL/8x10 rig. All were excellent, I just kept moving to the "next best thing". I started with the 3-Pro, sold it and moved to the 6-Pro, sold that and moved to a 4-Pro with an SVP-Pro preamp. That was probably my favorite Ampeg setup; nonetheless in an impulse and unreasonable move I traded it and my old 410HLF toward an SVT Classic and an 8x10. It sounded fantastic, but after gigging with it a couple times, I realized that I liked the 4-Pro w/ the preamp better. But it was gone forever and I had a really expensive, high-quality amp that didn't fit me. So at that point, I decided trade it all toward the amp I've wanted since I was 14: The Mesa 400+. Couldn't be happier, this amp is going nowhere. GAS shall not claim it from me, as it did my 4-Pro!

As for cabs, I'm currently running an older Ampeg 6x10 with the Mesa. Sounds amazing.

Ampeg makes great amps, they're just not for everyone. There was only one that fit me, and I stupidly traded it off for something that didn't.

I love my V4b and my B15s. To me they produce what bass is all about. I play mainly soul and r&b, and my Ampegs do that sound better than anything I've tried. (FWIW, I've owned Eden, SWR, and didn't quite get what I wanted there.)

There's lots of great stuff out there. I personally like the GK amps quite a lot and have been impressed by the Mega Boogie 600. I've tried the Markbass and really enjoyed the sound, look and portability of their products. I just think for my style of music the older tube Ampegs do it better, or at least more authentic, than anything else.

+1 to the comments about "hate" being a strong word. The fact that something isn't a personal preference doesn't make you a hater. We don't all like the same amps; that won't cause any resentment or hostility amongst mature folks with brains. The conclusions, then, are obvious.

I've just spent fifteen minutes deleting posts and sending messages about some of the comments in this thread - please, let's try and act like adults here, okay?

I agree that hate is a strong word. My first reply to this forum was not hate inspired, I still own Ampeg products :). I am unhappy with the Ampeg buyout and subsequent production overseas. I understand why my reply was deleted since it had an inflammatory response, followed by one from me, my bad there. I'll try to be less inflammatory in the future, even if I'm just stating facts. I'm not a hateful person. But, I am a patriotic American, and I won't apologize for that. :) I am sorry for inadvertantly helping to stir up a bees nest that you had to clean up.

Come to think of it, the one thing I probably miss most about my Ampegs was that I could sit at home and play the hell out of them, and they sounded excellent. Then I could take it to band practice, and be heard well. And when I took it to the gig, it fit into the mix so well that I felt like it had lived there forever.

They weren't incredibly versatile amps (especially the Classic), but they always sounded great no matter where I was playing, and required very minimal adjustment to get a good sound (or more like, avoid a bad sound). My Mesa and GK amps give very satisfying sounds at rehearsal and live, but require significantly more knob-fiddling. And for some reason, when I'm practicing alone, I can't get a colorful, satisfying sound out of either amp. They both sound sterile by themselves, and really require a band to shine through.

Man, kinda starting to miss my 'Pegs. oh no, GAS!! go away!! :D
