Why don't stores set up basses decently?

I read a lot of bull about personal fave setups being the reason. This is nonsense.
There's rule of thumb for setting up the truss rod and there is such a thing as acceptable action. Also, the intonation can only be fixed in one position really.

The real reason is most sales people are not interested in music or musicians. Only money talks.

The Guitar Centers near Seattle keep the cheep basses set up well. And they have a crappy set up on the Pro Level basses. The manager said they make their money on volume sales of less expensive stuff.

The amateur who does not understand the concept of a good stet up, will think a Squire bass plays so much better than an American Fender Bass. They walk away thinking they got something special.

I have read this crap over and over on Talkbass by new bass players who say their Squire plays so much better the a pro level bass.
