Why E string sound is too thin

I play p bass hot rodded 1999. Overall sound is very nice except the E string (4th string) having too thin.
For example, at 5th fret, string 3-2-1 are solid round while 4 th (A note) seem too thin.
Why that ? Can anyone please help

Possible E string is defective

I've actually noticed this on my p bass as well as on a lot of fender instruments. the E string kindof just has a less full quality. I find that when playing at louder volumes (and with sadowsky preamp DI) the problem is solved, and the E string sounds a lot more full and consistent with other strings.

I can second that about the solution for me with "thin" sounding strings has been 1. replace strings and if thats not it.. then 2. better pickups.. I now have the full sound of E and low B i've always dreamed of.. it only took a major change though..

Spend some time adjusting the height of the pickup under the 'E' string. Mild changes in string to pole height can make quite a difference.

Sometimes B and E strings sound more like they should after they break in and the fundamental and lower harmonics dominate.
Also, certain strings just don't get it on certain basses- try another brand or type.
Another factor can be what it's played through- different Bs and Es sound produce different balances of harmonics and they need to be matched with something that will bring that particular string out, or find the strings that sound good thru what you're running it thru.

Am I the only one who thinks it's weird that the strings sounds fine on the first three frets, but not beyond?

E string 'weak/thin' at 5th fret and (up?) while ok at first 4 frets would be a little funny...
Still could be a combination of that particular (make) string combined with that particular bass and amp setup.

put up a recording of you playing half steps up the neck starting from the low E and stayin only on the 4th-string (E-string up the neck)
