why???? final cut and logic for intel mac's only what to do?

so i just bought a used g5 with lots of ram and a quad core. but after noticing that the new logic and final cut are for intel only computers this has me kinda bummed.

i can exchange the computer and take a hit with their restocking fee but since they don't have an intel based desktop yet i'll have to wait.

i just ordered final cut studio and logic 8 this week and it came today but since the news of the release of the new software im not sure if i should return it or keep it and deal with the computer that's being shipped to me.

i have an intel macbook pro which is a fine machine but it can only go up to 4 gigs and i know i will need more than that eventually.

plus snow leopard is going to have 64 bit processing and it's only going to be for intel macs


so do i:

a) keep the software and computer coming knowing that i can't upgrade

b) return the software since i know the laptop i have can support it even though my computer coming wont, and keep the computer that is coming

or

c) exchange the computer coming and wait until they have what i need/want and exchange the software

i appreciate your help

The future is with Intel.

If you got your G5 for a good enough price, and are content using Leopard and Logic 8 (both great) for as long as you'll have this Mac, stay with it.

If you want to have the latest and greatest, you'll need an Intel processor. OS 10.7, etc. will not support your PPC, nor will Logic 10, 11, etc.

The current OS and current software works great. It's not that it stops working. But you are missing out on a few features (and the list will grow as time goes by).

The writing was on the wall when Apple quietly said a year or more ago Snow Leopard was going to be Intel only. Then officially said it a couple months ago. So every upgrade by upgrade will move to Intel only, especially with the economy only having to develop and test for one platform will save them a lot.

As for your Intel MBP that will hold you for a while since Logic and FC are set 32-bit apps'. They probably won't go 64-bit till there next major upgrade and being Apple took about 2.5 years for this last upgrade you have time.

Yes that definitely mean no tech support.

From other forums I've read some of the support programs are having trouble on PPC. It's a Dot-Zero release and like all to Dot-Zero release people are finding lots of bugs. I would say be happy with version 8 there is plenty to learn and use. Then when 9.1 comes out and many bugs have been fixed maybe you will be ready move up to an Intel Mac.

Ever since Apple bought Logic and instantly abandoned all of us PC users, you could see how the wind was blowing. It's not about you, it's about them.

I use Ableton now.

(That said, I love Logic, and if you're bound to stick with it, I agree that Intel is the future. Pony up and make the switch!)

It's no secret that PowerMacs are soon to be obsolete. You don't want
to invest a nickel more in that computer. I would take the restocking fee
hit and unload it. Get an Intel-based Mac. Of course, it will cost more
but it will provide many years of service and can even run Windows.
You'll have it all.

i think i will just take the computer coming and the software i ordered and be a happy camper. from what i read computers change about every 18 months and i know it will take me longer than that to learn the software

i already have ableton and pro tools on my macbook pro laptop

the desktop (mac g5 quad 10 gigs ram 2 terrabite hd) should suffice for the logic and final cut stuff i will be doing

by the time i got projects underway i will have saved up for a better machine and upgrading.

besides i definitely will need the tech support

Sooo You have a mac running on an AMD phenom I/II quad core? If not then what brand processor are you using? If this is a relatively new mac then I'd see this as quite improbable since they do have exclusivity agreements with Intel to only use their processors.

That's also very interesting that they would restrict a software's use based on the processor you are using. The AMD Phenom II Quads have done well on benchmark tests, rivaling the Core i7 by Intel...and thats not even the black edition Phenoms :D

Logic 8 is a great product, as are the G5's, but it may be advantageous to get a newer Mac Pro. It does not have to be the latest model, but try to get an Intel Mac. Snow Leopard will include Grand Central which will do wonders for multicore computers and large amounts of RAM. Your MBP will be able to run the new OS and software, but I get the feeling you don't want to use it for recording. Tons of people use MBPs with Logic without any problems, if that is any consolation.

IBM built Processor built on Power PC architecture. It was before Apple switched over to the Intel built x86 processors.

im just stickin with the computer i got and the final cut studio 2 and logic 8. by the time i've got it figured out i could upgrade then but i've had a laptop with software for a while and not gone very far so i consider this my school instead of taking out loans...

there was a 3 day exchange only option for the computer i got and i'd rather roll with that and the software i got since i know i can get tech support and its great software.
