Why hasn't the 5-string P become more prominent?

I ordered mine from Sweetwater on the very last day they could use the old price. Their website had actually bumped it up per Fender's directive but because I started talking with them before that they honored the original price.

Hey there. I fit the, "P-Bass is a P-Bass, perfect as it is" motif. I love my 2nd generation '57 RI. I had an original so when it came time I got a RI. I use it for gigs and sessions where only a P will do.
The 5'er I use is modern and it can cop that vibe but I do play the P for the real R&R , Rock-a-billy, Blues, Dylan etc. where you want that authentic tone. There are other musics where the P just isn't the best.
I use a Japanese '51 RI where the '57 P sounds too modern.

Same here, but I'm getting interested again. I really feel the need for a passive fiver.

I spent an hour noodling around on a P V today at GC - the place was scary abandoned with no deedly-deedly, so I was actually able to get a feel for the thing. I like. I like a lot. Lots and lots.

Time to sell something to buy one, I fear.

Some of us have to go about things our own way. Of course Fender announced the P5 about 2 months after I ordered this bass. Knowing that I probably would have spec'd this one differently, but its so kickass I didn't care.
