Why have so many basses?

I fail to see how the number of instruments a person owns matters. A single bass purchased for $200 could cause as much suffering as a collection of 25 basses valued at $50,000. Not that you cannot care for your instruments and protect them, but you could easily obsess about every scratch or dent in your $200 bass to the point of misery.

I think the OP lacks perspective. For example, the paintings you buy for decorating your walls probably cost more than $1000 each. You don't question the fact that you have 10 or 15 of these paintings throughout your home, even though you don't "need" any of them. The quartz surfaces in your closet might cost $10,000. Could you have chosen a cheaper material? Do you have extra pots and pans that get used rarely or that are redundant? And yet you worry about the number of instruments someone else has. The deeper question is: Why does this worry you at all?

When I see some of these YouTube videos where someone has 15 different Stratocasters, I think: "Darrel Braun really likes stratocasters." I am happy he is able to enjoy his instruments and is able to have as many as he does. I do not think: "Why do I have so few Stratocasters? Darrel Braun is hogging all the instruments."

Don't let jealousy of other people's collections cause grief. Be happy for others and your life will be more enriched. I am happy that you have at least one bass and that you can play it well. Rock on!

Hi Burny :), that' s how the thread started...

At the risk of sounding judgmental - I am pretty sure it's not that "binary"..

I am a truly terrible golfer, but I love to play it (now - to be fair; I don't have an exotic hand-made set of clubs)

Regards
Mark
Ha
I'll bet I'm a worse golfer than you and I do have a handmade custom set of clubs.
They are hardly exotic though, coming out of a catalog of parts.
It is cheaper to build than to buy stock sets from the golf store.
That's why I do it. I'm cheap.

It is also a hobby within a hobby, to learn to understand what goes into building golf clubs and how to fit them to an individual. As a result, I have a few extra golf clubs lying around. Some get rotated into the bag, some just sit around. But they all a have my own stamp on them. I designed and built them.

Likewise, a hobby within a hobby is modding, or even building bass guitars.
This can also be why some folks have several basses.
If I modified a bass to my liking, or even built one entirely, I'm more likely to want to hang on to it, because it has my stamp on it.

To the clan at large, and the OP in particular, as it is his or her thread. I must take a moment to derail this to address a couple comments made in the course of this thread, in a purely culinary aspect...
1. PLEASE, I beg of you, do not “pee on my pop tarts”, I use those to make my ultra dark, smooth and tasty “Double fudge Pop Tart Porter Ale”
2. Some of us prefer to “beat a dead horse”. It is a time honored and proven way to tenderize tougher meats.
Again, sorry about the derailment, please carry on, this has been insightful in so many ways....

I own five. Why? Because I like to have a main bass, a backup, a fretless and a 5 string. The fifth one I got at a steal of a price and I couldn't resist. Every one of the basses I own was bought with "bass money" that I have been shuffling around since the early 90s. Buy low, sell high, repeat. I sold a really expensive rig, and turned that into a smaller, less expensive rig, and funded something else, which I likely sold and eventually got where I am today. Do I "need" more than one bass? No, of course not. But if I can afford it, have the room, and hide most of them from my wife...why not?
