Why have so many basses?

I feel i was very humble and politically correct about how i posted my dislike of collectors who can't play well and put Youtube videos up showing their 20 guitars that they can't play. you only need one to get good.

lol, "I feel I was very humble" as he sits in judgment of others and takes the time to list his dislikes...

Maybe some should spend less time practicing bass and more time on self inquiry. Get to the root of the need to judge
others. I don't think their practice time is "justified" when their personality is in need of some work.

Some people collect basses and some collect judgments and false virtue
I'm clearly in a bad mood today. lol

Well collecting is fine. but when it affects a serious players ability to get an instrument he truly needs or would do justice by owning. well then i just don't agree with collectors. guitars were meant to be played.
Your argument seems to keep shifting like a target being placed where the bullets hit.
People are able to justify having lots of basses, so your reason for posting changes when your prior argument gets shot down.
Methinks there is a reason for starting this thread that you have yet to reveal.
Otherwise, why do care what others do with their time and money?

i'm late to the party...again! :D

why not learn to play one before you buy 20 more?
i actually think this is a fair question. the answer to which: is also fair, whether i/we agree with it or not.
i have since hated the world and find it hard to continue living. i take it day by day at this point. it's all i can do.
:roflmao: you're going to have to get a better grip: this is talkbass.
for what it's worth i never joined this site to make friends.
well: my advice = don't post threads. but this thread belies that statement even though you have been --- apparently --- successful. good luck on your journey!
I often wonder why people post on public forums when they have no grasp of spelling or punctuation.
 thank you for making the OP's point! it looked to me like his train of thought needed a bump when you posted!
I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, gamble, womanize, watch tv, go to concerts, don't dance, or go to clubs
let me be the first to congratulate you... and to advise that you get out a little more. :D

IMO: the OP was in over his head when he posted the thread = it's an old topic. but in his defense = even if he had perused previous (historical) threads on the topic he may have wanted an 'update' from the current hive participants. not a big deal. and "beating a dead horse" is just an opinion...like everything else on this forum.

i have read every post up to this one, my own (my usual routine). i hit the 'like' button on many of the posts because 1) they were funny to me, or 2) they reflected my own POV, or 3) they differed from my own POV, but i took them as thoughtful, nonetheless. in summary: you cats are a hoot! fun(ny) or not = very entertaining!

someone here should stay and clean up the mess. i'd do it but i have a gig. :D

Not absurd. i have been playing since the late 80s professionally. have been in many types of bands from here in PA to Northridge, and Hollywood ca. Played spring break Daytona in the 90s. just so much. i remember a time when musicians were serious and there were not a lot of hobby people. Gibson quality is going down? Music man. i have had to send a stingray back because of fret problems. i could go on about quality control issues. and not just about basses. i also play guitar. had quality control issues. pa system issues . expensive home studio monitors issues. "quality control" is a problem when too many people are buying . not absurd at all.
And that's all related to someone who can't play but owns 17 basses... how?

For the most part the reason is because we can. I think people get involved in any hobby and it is a distraction. 80% of the folks that buy expensive basses/guitars do not make their living from playing music. I like to look at the different colored basses or awesome wood tops. I have always liked how certain guitars looked. I am not a guitarist but always wanted to own a white 3 pickup Gibson SG ( gold pickups and hardware, of course) Not even sure why. My father was a great fisherman, he had the opposite affliction. he used 1 rod and reel most of the time and spent very little money on his hobby. ( he grew up in the depression and it affected how he spent money).
I have about outgrown the GAS that I had years ago. I play 1 bass, though I own 8. I am more interested in acquiring ultra cheap basses that surprise people how good they are... my main player cost me $200.

Certainly not to be judgemental or come across superior in any way.other but i often wonder why do so many people own so many expensive basses when they can hardly play one? maybe i am missing something here, but it just seems pointless and a waste. is it perhaps an insecurity thing . you know the more great basses you have will make you a better player? also it would stand to reason that a serious player would want to "bond" with one instrument and get to know it intimately. i would think that is important. in my first years i had one good 80s fender precision bass that was with me for many bands clubs and gigs. i didn't need 10 basses. was just wondering what others thought.
Its a sickness..LOL I could get caught up with it easily. There Beautiful and Seductive. I have friends who have thousands of dollars invested in all types of guns and they are never shot. They see the light of day when the gun safe is opened to show off to their friends.

you only need one or two basses to become a good or great bass player

Wait, I thought one was all you needed?
So other guys are thinking, you only need 2 or 20 basses & have no plans to become good or great players, or they gave up that dream a long time ago.
I'll never be great or even good (don't have the ears for it), but I like owning instruments & playing them for my personal pleasure.
How many I own is frankly none of anyone else's business, as long as I am pulling my weight & supporting my family.

What specifically bothers you? The fact that people collect things? That people may be at a different point along the path to becoming the best bass player that they can be? How people allocate their disposable income? The appropriate use of capital letters?
