Why is it so friggin' difficult to find bass boxes!!

Guitar Center puts them in the trash bin. Look in their dumpster. Done it before, had good luck. Not the most glamorous thing to do, but it had to be done.

OR! You're going have to go to UPS and pony up the money. I've done it a million times.

Nice things about that is if they pack it and mess up and it breaks, it's on them. Luckily a Geddy Lee bass isn't a one of kind, so they probably won't "loose" it.

You're not making Jersey sound good. I gave fedex a home made box for a neck that was triangular one one end and cubical on the other and they were fine with it.

That's because they wanted to sell you a box! You should see the stuff I send/receive in "custom" boxes.
Someone (a person) makes every box--- you can too. Find another carrier, USPS in my area are great to deal with.
Either spec your sale as "buyer pays shipping" or work it into the price.

I go to my ups store they actually cut down a bigger box for it. Really anything fragile or more expensive i have the ups store pack for me. Pedals and little stuff ill pack myself. But yeah even if i ship using usps i still pay ups to pack it if it's a bass

The excuse they gave is that they will not insure an improvised box because they can't be sure of how sturdy it is. I asked the woman to feel it and see if it's sturdy enough. She said it doesn't matter if it looks and feels sturdy, they won't accept responsibility for it. None of their boxes fit the case I had. It was one of those Kaces that are a cross between a gig bag and a hard case, so it was a little taller than the normal G&G type hardcase. A normal case may have fit in one of their golf boxes, but this one was a few inches higher than that.

As it happens, I managed to get a shipping company to box it and send it and it didn't cost me too much. More than it should have, but not ridiculously so. I have two 5 strings on the way and I plan on holding on to the boxes just in case. But I think I'm done with buying and selling basses for a while.

I suggest US post office. Here is one I shipped last week and insured for $300. It's a MIM P.
I clipped off the top of the package to protect the buyers privacy, but the pack job is totally home grown.

Uline sells ones that work. Here they get found in the storage building that contains "Dad's box collection" as my children call it. It contains boxes of basses bought, cheapo MF bass case boxes(good for shipping in a case or double-boxing), and even some guitar boxes. You can fab a box from bicycle boxes(Wally World, etc.) or any similar flat box.
