Why is playing with a pick so frowned upon?

And I think most can agree that those that do frown upon it probably don't know much about playing the instrument
In a very hostile and frowning way, I feel so offended.
Anyway, been sharing my personal experience with other bass players. It is entirely possible I've met only ******** since they are like 90% of the population.
That's a joke, right? I hope you are joking. I have been in this thread from the beginning and I've seen no one be hostile toward you.
For a Talkbass thread, in fact, I think things have stayed remarkably civil.

My personal experience is the opposite of yours - 90%, or more, of the people I meet are normally nice and civilized.
Just a thought - people may sense that you assume they are ******** and it's entirely possible that you are therefor met with the same attitude and you yourself create the reality you see.

Yes, but for either of these statements to have any validity you must first do a search. The you must either fire somebody or do a rage quit. It's the only way

But you're choosing to not use a tool in your toolbox because "guitarists use picks". So you're potentially sacrificing a level up in your playing just to spite a guitarist? That doesn't seem like an informed decision. If you didn't like the tone, understood, can't argue with that. But for spite? THAT sounds like a beginner to me. Just saying...good luck whatever you play with.

I think it is pretty obvious.
I don't use pick... But I am learning it myself. It requires lots of skills to be able to play clean, fast and complicated line with picks.
I guess ppl just associate bass player with pick with root oriented rock bass player who have to play bass coz there is a better guitar player in the band.

I didn't mean that I don't play a pick because mostly guitarists use them, (even though my comment is worded like that) I just don't play them because I don't really enjoy the tone. Sorry for the mix up, I have absolutely no problem if someone uses a pick and I don't view them as beginners if they do. As a bass player I've grown up and have learned about all the different types of genres, styles, misconceptions and etc. that differentiate all bass players from one another. I don't believe anyone who uses a pick is on a lower level than me or any other bassist! To be honest were all beginners, no one is ever going to know exactly every single thing there is to know about bass. You can be as skilled as you want on the bass, but that doesn't mean that you know every major essential part of bass up to the nonessential stuff. I just really don't like to split people up into those categories of Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and blah blah because at the end of the day we are all bass players no matter how skilled or experienced we are from one another. Just like no matter what religion or color you are, you are just as human and equal as the next person. So yeah you can call me a beginner, but so are you and every single bassist on here. Worrying about being an advanced bass player is overrated, learning to be a "bass player" is crucial. Some bassist need to just play and stop worrying about people using the labels "Beginner" and "Classically Trained" or "Self-Taught," just be yourself through your music instead of emulating the sounds of others and worrying about trying to be on a higher pedestal than someone else. It took me awhile to realize that, but I overcame it, obviously some people haven't...

OP, the less time you spend worrying about what right hand techniques your fellow bass players approve of, the better. Picks, fingers, thumbs, funk fingers, etc. They're all ways of attacking the string to play a note. I play with my fingers, thumb and a pick. And I could give a rats @$$ what another member of TB thinks about my choices when it comes to attacking the string. I make my choices based on what sounds right for the music.
So make it musical and make it groove. That will always matter far more than how you're attacking the string.
