Why is playing with a pick so frowned upon?

LOL! An interesting analogy. Well for a pedant my use of IS is maybe too literal. I half agree....a VAN may be a type of Car. But, you can't drive a car or truck using a pick, fish, drill or hammer without getting into a bit of a pickle...so doesn't equate ;)
Anyway my point is that a bass guitar is called a bass GUITAR for a reason. It's a guitar in a lower register. Much like a double bass and a cello are in the violin family, a bass is in the guitar family. At least that's the way I look at it. So why the hell not play it the way you like with what ever technique or method works for you, or is demanded by the music?

I am saddened by the fact that this is what this thread has turned into. I was searching for answers as to what caused a social problem and ended with the problem itself.

I guess I can answer the question myself already. Why is playing with a pick frowned upon? Because people are schmucks. Honestly, I am not surprised.

Maybe that's because it's not really a problem at all. That's what the majority of us are saying.

When people think less of someone for petty reasons such as skin color, sexual orientation, nationality or preferred picking technique on a bass guitar then we have a problem.

I appreciate diversity of opinions but not animosity for trivial reasons.

Seriously? Those first three issues are problems for sure but to put "preferred picking technique on a bass guitar" up there on par with them is a bit ludicrous, in my opinion. Those other issues have been addressed by the US Supreme Court, but I don't see them ever hearing arguments on the scourge of Picking Preference Prejudice.

The majority opinions in here have been 1) it's not a problem, and 2) if you encounter it, ignore it. I agree with both those sentiments. If you get your panties all in a wad because you think someone will "frown upon" you for using a pick on bass, then, again in my opinion, it is you who has a problem. Get over it and get on with it.

I am not the one with the problem here, I couldnt give less of a poopie when some snob of an old fart or some hormone charged teenager gives me poopie for how I choose to play my instrument of choice.

You are confusing my curiosity with sadness. I dont feel bad about what some elitist dufus told me, I am just curious about why these people give a poopie.

That's a lot of bleeps for some reason.

That's just it, they don't. The vast majority of folks don't give a rat's patootie how you play your bass, and the few that do (if they actually exist) don't matter. Some folks "frown upon" those who wear brown shoes with black pants; this "problem" is about that serious. Hey, let's start a ten page thread on that one! :D

I wasnt really asking about the majority as you can see. And I'd actually go meta and ask why do people care?

We know there are people worried about and having opinions on all sorts of things that are none of their business, that's not new. It's really more interesting to ask yourself why you care what these people think. You can't control it, and it has no impact whatsoever on you unless you yourself let it affect you, so why give it even one moment's thought? The best way of dealing with a$$hats is to ignore them completely.

Some purists do frown upon something that doesn't pertain to their parameters of understanding.....woe betide them for they close the door to another world....might it also just be that they are afraid of something they can't do or haven't tried?

in thrity years of playing, I have never considered a pick-
this past year (out of necessity) at times I have had to, due to tendonitis.
I have to admit, it doesn't come naturally to me, but at times, a pick is the right choice and can sound awesome.

I started with bass, finger style. Then I also dabbled in guitar, no pick. I started using a pick as I was wearing away my nails strumming. And I learned to play guitar, even lead with a pick. Bass - still can't play with a pick in a worthwhile way. I don't practice it much because it feels so alien.
