Why music?

It's all jazz...it's ALL jazz...

Attached is a picture of me playing at 3AM because I was hearing voices. Yes, I have schizophrenia. For me, music is a refuge, an oasis, a home. I find great solace knowing that it will always be there for me, even if I'm the only one listening. So I ask, why music? Why do YOU do it? What keeps YOU going? For me, music allows me to weave my own narrative into the very fabric of my reality. It sounds heavy, but in simple terms, with all the noise going on in my head, music is a sound that I can control. It's MY noise.

I have been diagnosed with a few things and have had some issues in general. Music is certainly one of the things I love most in life. I can express things to people who wouldn't necessarily interpret the melody, harmony and meter as I do. They may never know that the composition is an outlet of my perception. With music there is no need to explain thru filling out a form, no need to process thru a group therapy, no need for a case worker or counselor. Lately I've been enjoying theory and musicology as well as upgrading my basses, so, music is a amazing personal bubble for me in which all resources are mine until I'm ready to leave the bubble and share. Keep it with you on your terms and life changes for the best.

As someone who can not have children, I have always enjoyed the idea of creating something to leave behind, so there will be proof I existed once I no longer do.

But mostly, I just really like music. It's one of the few things that can always make me feel better.

Are you familiar with Eric Ericsson? He has a bit (worth reading) about that drive to leave something behind.

As to the OP's question....it's fun. Also the chance to make something others might enjoy.

For me music is like a great friend. I work better when I listen to music, I go to sleep listening to music. It’s honestly to the point where it feels weird to drive my car without music on. As for playing. It gives me a way to vent in a positive way. Also gives me something to look forward to. Like if I’m having a rough day at work I’ll just think
“I have x amount of time left and I’ll be at home playing bass.” Keeps me from going crazy with the daily grind.
