I think your notion of toxic misconceptions gaining traction in this thread is "reaching" in the same way that the claims of two other posters that claimed there was a racist selection process as to who appears in the magazine. That's my opinion and it's also my opinion that race still plays a factor in this soceity, note that both of these notions can coexist at the same time.

Show up and post more often, not just when you want to do damage control. :D

Hey Phil. I said "among some," but I dig you didn't read it that way. And of course race still plays a factor in society.

I'll try to post more often, though I don't think I was doing damage control. More like trying to make the process behind the magazine a little more transparent, on the off chance someone's curious. Plus I think a little perspective might help inform a discussion among people who don't actually know all that much about the sausage-making at BP. I don't think any damage was done to control.

That said, I'd like to post more beyond only representing the magazine; when I have something to contribute. I wish I had more time, and that it wasn't always on a Sunday night! I know how to up the vibe! how about a little gigspam?! 4/26, 28 w/ Matthew Charles Heulitt Trio (excellent guitar player from Narada Michael Walden and Zigaboo Modeliste's band) and 5/1 with Cathy Richardson (current Jefferson Starship singer and fantastic songwriter). All in Bay Area...

Jonathan brings up the point I was going to make.

How many pages are there to squeeze EVERYBODY into?
They are kind of doomed from the get go if the object was to please everyone.

I'm looking forward to the new look and being a reader from day one I'd say "keep up the good work".

BP is pretty good at what it seems to set out to do I think.
So far I have not perceived it as particularly biased either.
BP has also made me aware of quite some interesting bands and musicians.
It is however not the only source of information and entertainment that I consult.
It is one of many.
Informative, entertaining, but only one of many places to go for information on music and playrs and so on.
That's all I am looking for in a magazine such as this.
I do not see it as particularly "important" or anything.

I could not care less what colour any given player may be.
To me it makes no difference whatsoever as I listen to the music because it touches me and not because the bassist is of a certain background.
That's not what music is about for me.
Music is obviously a reflection on the musicians background but it usually communicates it a lot better than words. IMO

here's an idea for a BP issue tho.
How about one dedicated to asian players.
A roundabout view on who is out there.
I'm sure they're there...

I don't even know our daughter's favorite Jonas Brother.

Some people get upset by them. I can't see getting upset by the Jonas Brothers. They're kids playing music for kids. On one forum, some people were going off about them recording some Beatles song... Providing they don't completely slaughter it, it's a good thing- if anyone in their audience finds out that their favorite song was once a song by the Beatles and goes out and discovers a whole "new" catalogue of music... that's a good thing. They might outgrow the JoBros, and they may never give the Beatles a second thought, but it might just change their lives.

Wow, great thread...20 years too late. my friends and I have been saying this for 20 years!!! Not just young players, legendary and other notifiably great players were all but ignored too. I dont think Louis Johnson, Mark Adams, Arron Mills or Marshall Jones have EVER been on a cover of BP, meaning THE featured artist in that months issue, so whoever said "its not about who's on the cover" is full of crap. Seriously, how many times have Flea and Les Claypool been on the covers? Now tell me how many times back in the day or later you saw Chuck Rainey on the cover or Terry Lewis, how many hits have these guys played on starting when they were up and coming? O K, we arent diminishing it to race either are we, look at those old readers polls, remember? No exposure to new up and coming players, no coverage, no info, the same 5 bassists kept hitting the top three over and over again. I still have almost ALL my old BP magazines so dont tell me minorities didn't buy them, hell its all we had. When the number one song/songs AND album/albums in the entire world on ALL charts are from Michael Jackson featured Louis Johnson and all he ever got were a few paragraphs, that states there is a serious problem in coverage. There is a lot of truth to the OPs question and statements. They've gotten a wee bit better but in the long run and grand scheme of things, it's about popularity first, and yes, Guitar Player is actually worse than that.

I wonder if im valid here to comment. More than half the time, I'm the only white guy onstage...and no that doesnt mean I play coffee shops! I dont think about it, until another fellow member of honkus-colorus comes up to play..I must admit that I think he or she is going to suck. Very wrong.

Ushers bassist : black
Ce Ce Winans Bass player : Black

The guys I sub for or have replaced on some occasions : black

As far as magazines go..its a business, thats all.

Very much so. Hopefully things change. I wonder if this is becomming the end of many tried and true business models...changing of the old guard nd all that...on some levels seems like it...still many hurdles.

she looks like she wants 1984 to come back. With more silver... ugh.

I know some people on TB think I'm a racial rabble rouser, but in the case of TB, I think it is actually pretty diverse for a magazine that aimed primarily at a majority audience. I think that is because African Americans have had a huge role as innovators on the bass guitar and string bass, and I suspect that the percentage of African Americans who subscribe to BP is greater than the percentage of African Americans in the general population.

That said, I wish they featured more up and coming players than they do, and wish they focused a bit more on the gospel and hip hop scene than is currently the case.

They aren't in the business of "showing love" - they are in the business of selling magazines, and the only reason they want to sell magazines is to sell advertising.

Money.

They aren't around to introduce the world to new players, they are around to make cash - however they can do so. If putting more emphasis on those cats would make them more money, they would do it.

It's the same reason you see twice as much on the news about Britney Spears peccadilloes as you do about real issues - the media is giving the idiocracy what they desire.
