Why oh why?

I think a lot of bassists are intimidated by the fretless, but it's not nearly as hard the general populous would lead us to think. I think many bassists fail on the fretless because they don't have the patience to learn it or the humility to accept that they're not going to be able to play their fretless as well as a fretted bass right away. Have a little patience and faith in yourself and you'll be fine.

Agreed.

I think it's because the fretless is such a hostile environment for poor technique, especially on the fretting hand. You just can't get away with that thumb wrapped around over the top of the fingerboard with the neck held in the palm like you see so many players doing. Or double-stops with two fingers (tho I still try this from time to time) with your hand all out of position and so on......

Relearning how to play almost completely isn't worth it in most cases, just to play pretty much the same instrument and the same music.

In my particular case, tho, any change at all was going to be an improvement in my playing and sound. So relearning a bunch of stuff wasn't something I was resistant to.

You can also get your gear a little cheaper sometimes because fretless basses can be harder to sell (i.e. my L2500 I got factory new for almost 400 bucks off retail cost ;))....

Well he's better than this guy:

Why were looking for a new bass on youtube?.......

He is truly amazing! How many bassists do you know who can play so fast that he's already on the chorus before the verse even gets out of the bass! His teacher must have been Chuck Norris!

Word to YouTubers: If you're going to speed up the footage, keep your head still, and don't walk towards the camera...
