Why Play Bad Venues?

Got real culture shock last fall when I subbed on a few gigs with different bands at casinos. Smoking is allowed in the casinos...I am a former smoker, but I cannot tolerate tobacco smoke at all anymore. Hated both of those gigs and will probably say no if I am ever asked to do one again.

For years I gigged every weekend in smokey bars. Like REALLY smokey bars. I drank a ton, didn't sleep enough, usually partied with a lady I met, and woke up with a terrible headache and felt like crap all day after. Well, I'm older and wiser (and married) now. Last year I had a run of those same smokey bars. This time: minimal drinking, no partying late with the ladies, and some decent sleep. Guess what? I STILL feel like crap! Turns out it was the smoke all along!
I say ditch the gig. If it's not fun, don't do it.

Going to play a smoking allowed, relatively quiet gig myself this evening. But...

1. I haven't gigged all that much lately.
2. It's decent pay.
3. What else am I gonna do on a Friday eve? Veg out and watch Netflix?

The OP never mentioned what he was being paid, but if it’s the standard hundred bucks, I wouldn’t exactly call that a “good” paying gig.

It is when you do the panorama photo, things get distorted. Ironically one of the complaints was about smoke and there was something burning in our area while we were playing outside not far from a dock. There was a patrol boat checking the area and I heard its radio saying something about night fishermen, but I don't think they found what it was. But there was definitely smoke. I was thinking about what I would grab if there was a fire.
