Why so many more StingRays/Sterlings than G&Ls?

And a quick look at the Musicman and the G&L shows essentially the same body style with only the headstock being different. Not sure I get the logic of the argument.
I've had an L2000 and a '51 Precision reissue at the same time, side by side, and, to me, they are almost identical. The StingRay is a bit more attractive as far as I'm concerned: the G&L is typical Leo utilitarian.
I am not a "fiddler" and like to get a good tone quickly and forget it, and I had NO problems doing that with my L2500. I read the manual quickly to see what each control did, then just experimented for a few minutes and I was off. Its not confusing at all, and certainly not any more so than the Stingray I played at GC.

This one is beautiful. I must admit that I don't really like G&L's body shapes (StingRay's as well) except vintage L-1000 which is perfect. Most G&Ls are too thin and sharp while SR looks like a really fat pear
G&L's look very plain jane IMO. I'm not saying thats a bad thing, I think that has a lot to do with their sales being lower than the EBMM stuff.
That said, I'd give a kidney for a Hog bodies L-1000.

I'd like to point out the beautiful wood grain and finish in all the G&L photos in this thread. Just one of the reasons G&L smokes Fender in comparison.

I think it comes down to: (not necessarily in any order)
1. Availability (not many sell G&Ls--and I don't think they think about big numbers.)
2. What people see others play
3. Classic look and distinctive sound of a MM
4. MM was a bigger step forward at the time than G&Ls actually were.
5. Many just don't know what their missing with G&L!

not that G&L is ugly or anything like that, but, a Stingray looks so much
better!
but also soundwise: G&L tends to sound like a little bit of everything but nothing in particular, in other words: there is no such thing as a particular G&L sound
with MM and Fender you get very classic sounds, although i do must say that the "real" MM's and Fender's sound fatter and more distinctive than those from the latest decades....

I read this a lot here but have never found it to be true. My only guess is that because the bass can be eq'd to cop some familiar sounds, that people must think that's all it does.

G&Ls sound very much like G&Ls. that complex rich MFD sound is VERY identifiable. someone posted an Identify the Bass by the Soundclip poll. to me, after listening to all five clips, it was simple to figure out which one was the G&L.
Yeah I think G&L has an unmistakable sound. I have always felt that the "signature" setting for an L2000 is both pickups in parallel. That is a tone every bit as distinctive as a Stingray.
