We make time for what is important to us.
IMO, if you're in a band that you believe in, you should want to promote it as often as possible. If you have songs, then you should want as many people to hear it as possible. If you are playing shows, you should want as many people to show up as possible.
As to why I do it?
Mainly because I'd like you guys to stop by a show so we can hang and let me buy you a beer.
I also like to keep myself real. I put links in my signature so people can actually see whether I suck or not. So that they can see whether I am actually playing out or not. And whether or not the claims I make here have any substantiation in reality. I like to have my online personality be an extension of my real-world personality, not a substitute for it. Just trying to keep it real........
I don't walk up to everyone I meet on the street and say, "I play this gear and I am in these clubs and I am in these five bands and here is how I rock out when I play and..." That would be annoying as hell. Very immodest. Outside of TalkBass (in the real world) those things come up in conversations if the other party shows interest in them.
My epenis is just average...
For me, I offer advice on this forum. I always believed the proof is in the pudding. Because I offer advice, I think the prudent thing is to offer the pudding as proof and everyone taking advice should look at the pudding too.

People, in general tend to shy away from criticism. The way I see it, if someone is willing to take the time to listen to what I am doing and offering feedback, I will be thankful because they at least put in some time and effort to listen and comment.
One of the questions I always ask in an interview, whether it's music related or not is "How well do you take criticism?". This is very important to me because no-one is perfect and if you want to grow beyond what you have now is to take some input from the outside.
You can't make an omlette without breaking some eggs.

What exactly is "keeping it real" on TalkBass? Joining the various clubs? Posting your gear? FB, ReverbNation, band website links?

Internet Zen is when your e-penis and real-penis are in harmony with each other.![]()
The number of links a poster has doesn't help me determine whether the input is BS or not.

I've read that a few times and can't make any sense of itI don't think your analogy of walking up to people on the street and annoyingly foisting irrelevant information about yourself on them is quite the same thing as not misrepresenting yourself on an internet forum.

I'm not doing it to brag, and if you heard my playing or saw the gigs I'm playing, you'd agree with me.It's there so that people can verify something that I claim or advise on. I do it to make myself accountable, not to show off.

Like anyone else that posts in a forum, I throw my opinion out there free of charge. It's up to the reader to discern what is useable and what is not. I've been accused of not taking TalkBass seriously and its true, hehe. It's just an Internet forum. Full of BS, anonymity and posturing, but every now and then there are some pearls of wisdom thrown out there. The number of links a poster has doesn't help me determine whether the input is BS or not. The information has to stand on its own two feet.
"Keeping it real" is simply being honest about who you are. I don't see what's wrong with that.
My point is if you want to keep it real, do what you would do when you talk to someone in person. If you are a walking billboard in real life, then it makes sense to do it here as well.
