Why the hatred towards guitarists?

Yeah, John would get REALLY mad at Pete for smashing the gear up. After a while, he just gave up and didnt say much anymore, I guess..

I'm with you, I see the word guitard to mean "I'm an insecure newbie and I'm scared so I attack what frightens me in a desperate attempt to gain false self esteem and blame others for my shortcomings".

But that's just me :) Sometimes it seems to be just a joke but much of the time it appears to be coming from ignorance and then it reveals a "basstard" posting it. :D

It also seems to be a violation of rule # 1 here and I'm baffled that it's tolerated so often.

Very observant :) Similar to the dating world where men bitch about women and women bitch about men, neither sees the crap the other puts up with and assumes it doesn't exist.

but i do play both guitar and bass also =D

Many will disagree with me here, but I think Muse is a great group of musicians. I look forward to their next album.

Anyway, my 2 cents, if I may:

Guitars are no more inferior than keys or drums or bass. However, for different players, it's a decidedly different story. There are simply better musicians (and people, for that matter) than others, and some of those people just happen to play guitar.

There are bad guitarists, bad bassists, and people who are bad at any instrument ever invented. I guarantee it.

I think I might agree with the psychological effect of the term "lead guitarist", previously mentioned. Seriously, why don't we have terms like "lead drummer", or "lead keyboardist", etc.? They would be accurate, wouldn't they?

The term should be fine, so long as it isn't allowed to go to his (or her) head. A band should be a team, not a few solo artists who happen to be touring together.

I'm the same person whether I'm holding a Les Paul or a Jazz bass. I'ld play everything if I could afford to.

Want to make yourself a better bassist? then play the guitar as well, and vice versa.

no, I'm not having this AT ALL

I think on balance, there will be a greater percentage of 'bass players who respect guitarists' than 'guitarists who respect bass players'

go off to a few guitarist forums and see how much respect they have for bass players and the role of bass guitar...

you're kidding right? virtually everyone here seems to understand the bass guitar's role of working close to be the glue between all the other instruments...

you don't get many less selfish musicans than bass players, because the role of bass is the least selfish ensemble role.. to do our job we have to listen and understand what everyone else is doing... what percentage of guitar players could you say that about?

Point taken. I was wrong to say imply there was no appreciation, but there are still too many people even on this forum who try to be "lead bassist".

I don't question that there are fewer arrogant bassists than there are arrogant guitarists. I just don't like generalizations when there are still good, humble guitarists out there (B.B. King comes to mind)

I don't think many people are serious about the guitarist insults though :)

but you can understand why guitarists and bass players sometimes don't see eye to eye... for a start off, many guitarists i've played with aren't flexible enough to want to do anything other than the stuff they've rehearsed over and over in their shed until they have it sounding perfect...

because we bass players frequently have to play something that fits around what some other guy wrote, we tend to have a kind of 'can do' spirit, where we'll give it a go and see what happens... it's the same with drummers.. you very rarely get the rhythm section not prepared to try something new, but I have encountered many guitarists who were only prepared to do things their way or not at all

if you have a guitarist with a desire to try new things, they are gold and should be cherished, because they're rare.. a guitarist who can improvise (and I mean improvise, not just pull out phrases from a 'bag of licks') is a rare and beautiful creature, and I wish there were more of them about

Although I admit I've contributed a guitard joke or 2 here, I've no hatred towards any guitar player (ok, maybe just 1) - and a great deal of respect toward many. That respect extends to keyboardists, drummers, & vocalists too.

What I can no longer tolerate in a bandmate is someone who thinks they're going to control every note I play, and every aspect of my sound. I did run across 1 such guitar player last year who pulled this kind of behavior - especially when I felt he could have been applying some of his "wisdom" to his own playing first. When it's on my dime, I refuse to play with people who are going to operate in this manner, although I still like to think this is a tiny minority of players overall.
