Why try to sleep in when it's impossible?

Yup , yup and yup. I have my alarm set for 4 am for work. Most days , I am up before the alarm goes off. To be fair , I do go to bed fairly early most nights. Weekends come and I can stay up a bit later. Yeaaay , I get to sleep in the next day. Nope nope and nope. I am up by 5 am almost every time. On nights when I have a gig , an afternoon nap is mandatory. Those nights I sometimes don't get to bed till around 2 or 3 am. Great jumpin' moosepoop. Even on those nights I'm usually up by 6 or 7 am. Fortunately , having worked construction all my life and having to get up early has turned me into a morning person. The morning ride to work these last few days has made for some spectacular sky watching as the moon , Venus and Jupiter have all been bunched together in the Eastern sky.

I almost always have my Kramer beater bass near my bed. If I wake up, i play it in the dark laying flat on my back. Excellent practice time. Cures insomnia. Often fall asleep with it in my arms.

I used to be that way. I was a morning person all my life: school, then college, then public school teacher. Always up early.

Then I quit teaching to be an arranger and musician. I started working all night, and sleeping all day. Got completely turned around.

Then years later I started a career as a corporate trainer. 9 to 5 again. Did I get turned back around to a morning person? Nope. Not once; not ever.

To this day, I can wake up every morning at 6, but if I don’t set that alarm on Saturday, I’ll sleep till noon.

I’m 55 and have never been an early riser. One semester of my sophomore year at college I had no classes before 11:15, it was fantastic. I still try to sleep till at least 10 (preferably 11) on the weekends.

Since entering the corporate world, I’ve managed to have jobs with somewhat flexible hours, which means I don’t have to get up early (typically) AND I’m able to avoid the worst of the traffic both ways. I can still get up earlier when I have to for an earlier call or meeting. Several times in the past couple years I’ve rolled out of bed before 6 for international calls.

I can't even blame it on old age, since I've had weird sleep patterns all my life. My parents finally gave up on me sleeping all the night and I started helping my Dad night calve by the time I was in the 8th grade. I usually crash on the couch for a few hours before midnight, go to bed, get up around 2:30 and write for an hour (or check the cows during calving season) go back to bed and get up around 6:00. If I don't have a lot of corral work to do I take the dogs for a run or a mile of xc-skiing, then go to work.
