I think you MISSED the Question..... "if that's what it takes for a pro bassist, WHY the hell would you spend $3k + on a bass of a different flavor ??" I'm not against them at all. First real bass I ever played was a 69 Jazz.. LOVED it. I'm well aware that the bass doesn't make the player.

The conclusions you're drawing are woefully short on connective tissue, no offense. One, you're apparently not seeing much of a variety of gigs, two, because you want to is the most obvious reason to spend more and/or not play a P bass, three, funk band with an Alembic? When was that?
