Wilde Lawrence - holiday sets.

I have two P basses, both with P46. I ran a set of J45s in my J bass but went back to single coils. I like the J45 sound but wanted more output to better match my other basses.

How would you compare single coils (and which ones?) to the J45 sound? Many say that the J45 is single coilish... I had some many years ago and don't quite remember.

Um, hard question to answer. When I play a bass, then swap pickups then play it, my brain/ears tend for sort of forget the first sound.

In my case the loved the tone of the J45s. I heard them as balanced, perhaps leaning just a bit toward being subdued. Yet when you slap or pop a note they are very crisp. The pick sound in my 70's spaced J were really good. And of course, dead quiet. So why change?

The one weakness they were low output which made my J bass not fit with my pedal board the way the rest of my basses did. So I swapped to a set of Fender J pickups that came from a CIJ bass. In contrast the Fenders are louder and perhaps a tad brighter. But only a tad. The basic sound of the bass is really pretty much the same, but the higher output meshes with my OD / compressor better than the J45s did.

So, my conclusion is, yes, the J45s do sound similar enough to single coils that in real use the can serve as a noiseless substitute.

How effective is the Q Filter?
Those are only $20 and seem compelling, but the only videos I've seen look and sound like they were shot on a CCTV security feed from the late 90s, broadcast over dial-up and from an underground prison facility.
I'd be inclined to at least try it at that price, but wouldn't mind hearing from folks who've actually tried it here before that.
