Will A Sponge Be A Good Mute Damper

I generally find the foam that new pickups ship in works well. I don't mute basses with it but 7 and 8 string guitars behind the nut. Keeps the harmonics down.

Pelican case bulk foam is great too and comes precut in nearly the exact right dimensions. Just tear off a piece and go.

Long term I have no idea what any of this stuff may do to a finish.

I used a piece of foam, works great for my current Aretha Franklin tribute band. Also nails some classic rock tunes like santana and other 60s songs.

Yup, it will work fine. I just bought one recently after watching
Leland Sklar show his sponge mute. He cut it up
into 2 or 3 cubes and places them between the strings.
Palm mute works OK for slower tunes but I was having
issues playing faster runs.
