Double Bass Will a tattoo be a problem in the classical world?

As a number of other people said, live with the idea of it for a while before getting one. I wanted to start a sleeve right when I turned 18, and I waited for age 23 before I started round one. I waited until I found just the right artist that could accomplish what I wanted them to.

As for reducing your employability...in other fields, possibly. If you were vying to be a youth educator, I would be prepared to cover them while working. For orchestral positions, your auditions are going to be behind a screen anyway, so if they're going to hire you, it will be based on your playing and not on your appearance. I knew I wanted to be a performer and eventually a university professor, and I have not met any resistance yet because I have work done on my arm. My tattoo was in sight at all of my graduate school auditions and I didn't get any "what's that on your arm" or "well, we WERE going to accept you, but..."

And just to clarify...no, I didn't get tattoos to be some sort of 'tough guy' (if you know me, I'm actually an introverted nice guy). In my opinion, tattooing is an underappreciated art form that is saturated with poor examples.
