Windows 8 Released

I have Win XP on my studio machine (works well, fast and stable), Win 7 on my main PC (I love this OS) and a Windows phone, so I'm sort of used to the tile thing already. But I have no plans to change up to Windows 8 at this time. That will happen when I need a new PC as I don't see anything to be gained by updating this one.

I'm still on Xp at home and don't plan to change too much of my software is from that era and cannot afford to abandon and retool at this point.

At work* everything is Win 7 and I like it okay, the trick has been to find where all the functions and features have been moved or renamed. There is some talk of migrating some machines to Win 8, but i don't see the whole shop going 8 anytime soon. *I work for a contractor at a major manufacturer.

You know you can disable buttons right?

I heard a rumor that you can set the desktop to something close to a traditional Win7 look, but haven't seen an example yet.

I actually use a free app called Rocketdock on my PCs, which gives me a "dock" similar to the Apple OS. Very handy, and i highly recommend it to all of yoU!

Good responses so far. I know of a lot of places that still use XP, it is a "if it isn't broke don't fix it thing" and I generally go by that rule as well. Windows 7 does everything I need and want to right now and still has the start menu and no the tablet UI (two of the biggest complaints of Windows 8) so I've been pretty set on at least on my main computer keeping 7.

Generally speaking you would think Microsoft would want to break that trend of having a great OS which people like (Windows 95/98), then one that sucks and people hate (ME), then like (2000/XP), then hate (Vista), like (7), hate? (8) and so on....if history shows anything Windows 9 will be awesome!

There is a desktop mode.

Yeah, you can avoid the new stuff 99% of the time. It's only when you want to launch an app that you go to the new-style menu.

Like most things, the weirdness has been exaggerated and you'll get used to it pretty fast. Though, as ever, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies. No point upgrading for upgrading's sake.

Yep, you can also put shorcuts to apps into one folder and run it as a "drop down" menu. I've done this for years. Several folders of different apps pinned to the taskbar, click on one and it drops a list of everything in it.
